Whats Your Expeirences with a Magnificent foxface

Flameangel88,
Mine is inhoused with a moorish Idol, black tang, scopas and blueface angelfish in the 220 gallon. He is very active and swim around all day. Every once a while the scopas tries to harrass the mag foxface, though he (maybe she) turn sideway and spikes the dorsal fins. Actually it is very interesting to watch him doing it.

Mine eats from my hand. I can pet him. He's best friends with a sailfin. He eats anything I put in. He hates his reflection. No algea in the tank. He'll even eat hair algea. Get one. Watch out for his spines

I've got a kole tang, sailfin, manderin. Three pj cardinals. Naked clown. Picasso clown. Coral beauty. Foxface. No one bothers anyone.

The Diver Den (Dr. Foster & Smith) currently sells Tongan Black foxface which they claim as a new species. I checked the book called “Surgeonfishes Rabbitfishes and their relatives” which lists 36 different kinds of a rabbitfish. A black foxface is not listed there. It kinda looks like a different color variation of a Mag. Foxface. It is a cool looking fish, but the price is little a bit high.

I have a very small one spot (about 2.5") I got about three weeks ago. He was skittish at first, but has grown much more accustomed to my presence. He lives (normally) in a 75 with a blue sided fairy wrasse and an ochre-striped cardinal. The fairy wrasse hated him at first flared and charged him, but the foxface just kind of took it for the first day until the wrasse gave up. Funny thing is the foxface now follows the wrasse around like a lost puppy. He can't quite keep up though.

Mine eats anything. I noticed he really liked some kind of short red brush-like (not hair) algae that's growing on my LR in a couple places.

The fish are in a hospital tank recovering from ich now. They should go back home in another three weeks.

Flameangel88, I bought the gold spotted rabbitfish instead (of a Bicolor Foxface). I paid only $34.99 at the local Petco. I put him with the mag. Fox in the 220 gallon. Hopefully, they will get along well. If they don't, I will have to transfer one of them to the 120 reef. I read rabbitfishes are a reef safe as far as they are fed well.

Gold spotted rabbitfish is a great looking fish. Best of luck with your new addition. If it went straight from Petco into your display I strongly recommend monitoring closely for the next week or two.

FYI a dude I know got a gold spotted rabbitfish a few months ago, and as soon as it got to the tank it ate his eleganse coral! They are not reef safe, and feeding has nothing to do with it.
Siganus vulpinus (unimaculatus, basically the same species. Currently under investigation) is the only rabbitfish that os considered to be 99% reef safe. Others MAY eat corals, and the spotted rabbitfishes are on the top of that list.

A LFS had ordered two species of spotted rabbits and sold some as "reef safe". Well, all of them were returned!! A friend of mine came to thank me that I stopped her from buying one, because later she found out that these fishes had destroyed some LPS...

I only have tridacna clams in my 220 gallon (no coral). So far neither the mag fox nor gold spotted rabbitfish hasn't bothered the clams yet.

I have a 4" mag. foxface and a 2" yellow tang in my tank. They are great friends and constantly have a tug of war with algae sheet strips. Fun to watch. Lately as he/she swims around, it appears as it is releasing toxin out of its spines. Has anyone else seen this before? Doesnt appear to bother anything else in the tank. It gets a little spazy sometimes but allround good reefmate.
