Whats your favorite method of SPS Husbandry?

I went from DSB to SSB to starboard BB. The main difference is a lot less algae. I increased the flow and went sparse on the LR. It's a very easy tank to care for.

by that I mean GPH of flow I am thinking of doing about 3,000 gph in my 150 gal I am seting up. 1500 from the sump and 1500 in the closed loop.

what brand of salt mix are you SPS guys using ?

Who are you again ?

Well anyway , I use IO . Not hat it's better or worse , but consistent .

The only two I would say do a search on is crystal sea and oceanic .

When you say wet skimming - do you mean a lot of water in your skimmate?

I agree, excellent thread :)

I've just recently experienced the benefits of wet skimming.

If you have a Euroreef skimmer, and don't have the gate valve output assembly, I highly recommend buying or making one. The gate valve allows much finer control of the skimmer, and much wetter skimming, than the standard riser tube.

Also, can anybody recommend a good kind of macroalgae for a refugium? From this thread it sounds like caulerpa and halimeda are not so wonderful.

Yep, still good flow, good skimming, regular water changes, and keeping parameters as stable as possible. Works for me.

Lots of flow, no substrate, no algae in system, agressive wet skimming and lots of well fed fish who through their "excretory activities" feed the SPS. Kalk topoff and calcium reactor to fuel the SPS growth. 10k lighting.

I'm sold on ozone as well.

I'm currently experimenting with the addition of vinegar to my Kalk topoff, figuring the bacteria need some additional organics to do their thing--so far, the results have been positive.

Coming up on two years with this method--I've never had better success with SPS. Two years was about the time I saw some disturbing changes with my DSB/chaeto refugium systems, so only time will tell if my current system is "durable".

I might feed a little more than I did a year ago ... but I've been happier with my tank since that time than ever before :)

No big change for me, either.

I've had good success with both dsb and my current bb.whichever method used these are the constants for a successful reef.
*good ro/di water mixed to a constant salinity(throw the plastic swing-arm in the trash and buy a refractometer.
*a good quality protein skimmer(go to any reefer who has been at it for a few years and and they can show you 2 or 3 skimmers they tried to get away with before buying a quality product.
**proper water movement.
*proper lighting for what you are trying to keep in your tank.
**water changes
*avoid all the magic potions that are being sold out there.
*good quality water testing kits.
*patience
*patience
*patience
*did i say patience?

A big thank you to all the contributers as I am in the beginning stages of planning an sps tank. This is exactly the kind of thread I have been looking for.
Big Bump!
