I've been in the web development business since 1995. 800 X 600 at 72 dpi is the most widely used resolution and is generally what you want to stay within, but higher res. and widescreen monitors are becoming more commonplace nowadays. I'd still stay under 900-1000 px wide if you want to avoid an annoying horizontal scroll for the vast majority of people.

1280 x 1024 - which works well for me.

And yet I'm constantly amazed when people post pictures that are 2200 pixels wide, causing the discussion to scroll off screen. That would be a triple scroll for those at 800 x 600 resolution!

It is generally accepted that the highest common screen resolution to design a web site for is 1024 x 768. This is the lowest resolution supported by most modern computers. 800 x 600 used to be that standard but not anymore.
