I have a Euro Reef skimmer and for a while i was only having about a couple of inches of water in my sump. Recently I raised my ATO to have about 4 inches... I still didnt see a great deal of skimmate coming up so, just yesterday i raised it again and now theres about 8 or 9 inches of water in there... Is this normal?

i just wanted to get an idea of how much water others had in their sumps. Please answer only if you have an ATO.

I have read that a lot of skimmers are designed to sit in about 8" of water but then again you can't believe everything you read right?!? LOL

I run my sump at 10" so I raised my EV-180 up 2".

Why only answer if you have an ATO? Most people have their ATO in the return section and have the rest of the sump run at a constant level. Sounds like you do not. I would suggest that you seperate your return pump from your skimmer section with baffles so that your skimmer section remains constant. Fluctuation in the skimmer section can reduce the efficency of the skimmer.

Thanks,

I have a sump that doesnt have baffles and i honestly dont want to unhook it and put some baffles in it. I have an ATO in the whole sump.

Reason i say only answer if you have an ATO is because im sure there are some people that dont have one and just add water periodically. In that case... Its irrelevent on what the keep there sump level at.

Still not irrelevent as those said people would be filling it to the same level each time just like an ATO.

My ATO is me. I top off when I get up and again when I go to bed. I always top off to the exact same level each time.

I have a 50 gallon sump, and a 90 gallon sump (on different systems) I keep them both within 4" of the top with an ATO, so the depths are 12" and 20" accordingly. (granted both systems utilize external skimmers)

the skimmer chamber of my sump sits at 10". I was running around 8, but have definitely seen some improvement at 10. It all depends on the individual setup.
