It's a whelk that came in on your tbs rock. You now have a ton of them in your tank of various sizes. FWIW, I removed a few from my shipment at first because I was worried, the remaining have not touched any of my turbo snails, fighting conchs, or margarita snails...the snail count is the same as I purchased over a month ago.

I only have three corals; a chalice, some zoas and a hammer. None of the whelks have bothered them and they are doing well.

Also, you will find some glass anemones, from what I understand, the sub-species that originate in the gulf of mexico are different than those that are from the south pacific, they are much less invasive and don't multiply as fast.

If you want to trap and worry about something, it's gorilla crabs and stone crabs...I have found a few, but they did not start appearing till week 2 or 3.

Most of the popping you hear is (like richard mentioned) small pistol shrimp. I was chasing a gorilla crab and had him cornered in a rock, I removed said rock and took a sawzal to it to get that crab (he was big enough to cause issues). In the process I found about 4-5 tiny pistol shrimp, they were all making popping noises and I could see them with their claws.

I have found one mantis, or seen one mantis, I have not seen him in a few weeks, I think my large pistol had him for lunch as he was hanging out near his burrow.

So relax, pay attention and enjoy.

It is a whelk, but I'm not sure you have a ton of them. They are fairly common hitchhikers. This one is kind of a generalist. It eats barnacles, some other snails, and maybe worms.

Cheers,

Don

Thank you Don - you seem to be the resident expert on these guys.

Not gonna stress over them

I've bought dry rock in the past. I'll stick with this rock.

I don't care that I have these hitch hikers, I do need to identify them when possible so I can determine if they will stay in the fuge, go to display, go to sump and what to feed to keep them from going rogue.

dry rock bites.:deadhorse:

I here there is some ultra cool plastic rock that looks like live rock until it grows algae to rival any mosses oak came pattern.

Digging this up because these crafty devils seem to be able to get from the refugium to the sump and then from the sump to the main tank.

My only real concern is we have a Desera clam and I'm wondering if that is at risk from these whelks.

I'd rather not get rid of or kill them - but I'm not interested in risking the clam.

Thoughts?

Those don't naturally occur in the same habitat as giant clams. In fact, that species feeds almost exclusively on barnacles in some areas...but other populations feed on other molluscs. It's not likely that they would kill your T. derasa, but it's theoretically possible.

Thank you, again, for sharing your knowledge.

I'll keep a sharp eye on them and see how it goes.

Working hard to not get in the mode of killing off hitch-hikers.

Well - verdict is in. Went to bed with a healthy clam last night. Woke up to a dead clam this morning and one of these guys stuck on the outside of the shell.

Guess we will run a mollusk free tank.
