I have a BC29.
First, work diliently to test your water regularly. Salinity, PH, Ammonia,Nitrites, Nitrates, Calcium and Alkalinity. Watching them can really give you fair understanding of what's going on with your water.
You may want to seriously consider purchasing a skimmer. While the good ones aren't cheap, they really do an excellent job of pulling gunk out. Ignore the Fission skimmer. It is a giant POS and all but useless. The general consensus for skimmer choice is either the Tunze Nano Doc 9002 or the Sapphire Aquatics BC29. If you have any interest in understanding the nuances of either, let me know and I'll be happy to bore you to death.
The BC29 is a great tank. Still, there are a number of opportunities for improvement. Most cost very little to implement. Further, almost all mods can be done with very little DIY skill.
Following is a list of things including tank mods that have helped me. Im new to all of this as well. This is what has worked for me, (in addition to a ton of advice from forum members.)
Chamber One:
Heater
Popped out bottom grill to improve flow.
Modded stock filter cartridge to accept Pura Pad sections. Can also add filter floss if there particulates are irritating me.
Lip mod on Chamber 1/2 wall to allow additional flow.
Live rock rubble in bottom of chamber
Chamber Two
Pulled Bio Balls out and am running a Sapphire Aquatics skimmer flipped 180 degrees in order to improve contact time in skimmer. Also have a Tunze on the way next week. Long story.
Chamber Three
Yanked out skock pump and replaced with Rio6HF. Stock pump is 268 GPH at 21 watts. Rio 6HF is 350GPH at 15watts. With our little tanks, wattage becomes a concern as it adds heat.
Chemipure Bag running passively in Chamber 3.
Digi Thermo
I pulled the stock outflow off and added a locline Y. This gives me dual outflows. One pointed toward front of tank up high to break up surface , and second one pointed down and along false wall behind rock.
It seems that nitrates are a constant battle for me. I do 10% water changes weekly and without fail.
If I can help in any way, please let me know. I'd be glad to send you some pictures (or better yet steal a few pics) of the mods listed.
Solid water params, improved flow, and a little passive and active filtration make life a whole lot easier with BC29.
