Hello,
New to the site, new to SW, had FW for years. Am in Detroit (Troy actually)visiting a buddy for the next three days. Any locals know any must see LFS's up here?
Thanks!
Will

Sorry, never been to Michigan. A google search and a sense of adventure is all I can say. Good Luck

....Keep your windows rolled up and doors locked

(just joking)

Ha. Yeah, there are definitely some down and out areas, but Royal Oaks and Troy aren't so bad.

I have done a google search, but I don't want to run him all over town looking at mediocre fish shops. Hopefully someone will see this post and let me know a couple of really good ones.

Preuss pets in Lansing is the first that comes to mind.. I've never been but I've heard great things.. And you won't have to worry about your locks in Troy.. Just watch for cops

Tropicorium. It's in Romulus, I think. They claim to have the largest selection of coral in the midwest. They have a greenhouse full of coral tanks. Their website is here. Not alot of fish, coral up the wazoo.

Wow! Both of those places look awesome. I live in Roanoke VA and the nearest place that has decent stuff is in Richmond (3.5 hours away). So, this should be awesome. Unfortunately I flew here, and I don't think TSA is going to let me bring a cooler full of frags back. It will be fun to look though.

Thanks for the tips!

+1 on preuss, went there for first time 2 weeks ago, and +1 on tropicorium, most corals you will ever see in one place

+1 to both those places, assuming you flew into Metro, you could hit tropicorium on the way out of town. Lansing is a bit of a hike from Troy. Everything else I would say is run of the mill, though Oceans and Seas is pretty nice when it's clean. Stingray Bay has a rare breeding pair of freshwater rays and nice clean tanks. Occasionally they get something interesting in but I haven't been there in a few weeks. The economy has been rough on the shops around here. Nobody is keeping rare stuff around on the hopes that someone will impulse buy it. I hope you have a pleasant stay. Then you can tell your friends, "Well, it wasn't as bad as Cleveland." Totally kidding about that I love Cleveland.

Your from Roanoke? I'm in Richmond. Have you ever been to Atlantis? I hear it's great, never been to see it for myself.

I thought there would be at least something over in Char'ville

According to Tropicorium I CAN bring coral back thru TSA (as long as there is no water in the bag), so I got a nice rock with some coral on it that I'll pick up before hitting the airport. Hopefully they are right about being able to get this thru TSA. Otherwise I just wasted $100. Anyone know for sure?

I couldn't make it out to Lansing and Preuss this time around. I'll be back and have to put it on the list for next time. We were too busy losing major money in MGM Detroit.... D'oh!

Is Atlantis the huge place in Richmond with the 2000G show tank? That place is definitely worth the tolls to get there, and the family that runs it are awesome. I haven't looked in C-ville, but there may be a place there. I have a friend that I visit in Richmond so I usually just pass through C-ville.

Atlantis is on the West End, I don't get up that way very often. One of the stores in Southside has a 2000g display so I'm not 100% sure which one you are refering to. I've heard Atlantis is awesome.

Sorry---- I jacked your thread without even realizing it. This was supposed to be about Detroit stores.

If you go back into the city during the day, you should have your buddy take you down Lakeshore Dr., (the closing scene in Gran Torino) It's pretty interesting to see what the auto magnates did with their money. Also, both Fishbones restaurants (one is on Jefferson which is Lakeshore in St. Claire Shores, the other is in Greektown across from the casino) have massive saltwater tanks, but they're mostly tang displays, as they're commercially serviced tanks without the light to keep anything but softies/shrooms.

TSA gave me no hassles bringing a 10lb rock with coral on it onto the plane. I was pretty surprised. I just hope that the x-ray didn't nuke it. I haven't seen it open since I got it home.

Thanks for everyone's input :)

Preuss Pets in Lansing is my LFS as well, they're great. While they do more than just fish, their saltwater department is excellent. The owner has been in the business for decades.

One thing to note about Tropicorium, is that it's essentially a barn on the back of a guys house. The owner is nice & will give you some neat deals, but it's not really like most other LFSs around, you park your car in his driveway. His coral area is colossal and amazing to view.
