When raising ALK?

I think the OP is asking what is a safe rate to increase the alk. It shouldn't be raised by any more than one dkh per day.

Raising the alk is always best done slowly.

But, before you just work on raising the Alk have you made sure that the Mg is in the 1250 to 1500 range? Mg is the storage engine/regulator for Calcium and Carbonate "in solution" in your tank. If the Mg is low you will have a hard time keeping the Alk levels up combined with corals and coralline pulling whatever is there.

If Mg is good then worry about Alk at a rate no greater than 1/2 dKH or no greater than your pH readings will allow whichever is the lowest threshold per day.

This calculator helps alot for using specific products with a calculator to help with the outcome of how much of that product it should take.

If you were going say from 6 to 9, I would not do this in 3 days. Change too fast is almost as bad as the low Alk problem to begin with. And stressed corals might be just weak enough for a quick Alk adjustment to push them over the edge. I'd play it safe and do this in increments of 2 days for every 1 dKH level you are going up or around a 1/2 dKH per day.

And while you are doing this no water changes or make an adjustement in your dKH daily increase to compensate the best you can.

Good Luck.

Im trying to raise the KH from 8 to 9-10.

So far i've have raised it from 8.06 to 8.63 in a 24 hr period, and was thinking that rate would be acceptable, but i wanted a second opinion if you will.

I have been introducing more SPS and some are ok, some have STN'd. None of them look to be Great though????

Params:
Kh 8.63 Lamotte
Mag 1350 Salifert
Ca 500 Salifert
No3 6.6 Lamotte
Po4 .03 Hanna

Bulbs were replaced about 2 months ago (250 De Phoenix)

This Tank is 2 years old, I had a crash 1 year ago where i lost about 50 SPS.
After the crash happened last spring I removed all skeletons and just left the tank run as a FOWLR until the fall when i decided to try again. So this past fall season I've tried some Milli's and Acros. But most have parished over time, some RTN'd over a 24 hr period, some STN'd over a week.

Its been pretty much miss and hit with SPS this time around and i cant explain it???:sad2:

Oh yeah I have a maxima and crocea clams that have been doing great throughout the past 7 months or so i really have no idea

Its been suggested that maybe i dont have enough Bio-Diversity and that could be my problem.

My fish list is this:
Blue hippo tang
yellow coris wrasse
Pair of Mccosker wrasses
Maroon clown
2 emerald crabs
1 serpant star
2 conchs
various Nassaurius, cerith, astrea, bumblebee, snails

150g display 75g sump

Hey buddy, I have been prayin now for a while. 2 of the 3 frags are doing fairly well still. The pink on is ok, receeded on the tips a bit, but still has decent polyp extension. the purple one still looks good though.

Im getting some encruting montis tonight and another Acro, so we'll see how it goes. Maybe a softie tank is next:lol:

Shoot who knows, I think im going to level out my alk around 10 and just continue to keep my hands out of the tank, except for water changes.

We'll see how the new corals respond over the next few weeks.

Until then.....I will refer to my Zacapa and the SPS gods.

I keep my alk around 9.5-10 and I feed too much. So, my colors aren't as good as I would like and the answer is to get more GFO running or feed less:eek1:

Atleast yours are doing well. Mine has become much more hit & miss this time around and i cant begin to explain it.

You feed less...... Dont go talking Crazy on me now:lol:

Your fish could audition for the Biggest Loser show:lolspin:

at 10 you have a bigger margin of arror compaired to a lot of guys running a 7-8

there more than 1 way to skin a cat

I hit a alk of 7 and something almost always dies. Lost a small acro last week. My alk was at 7.5 when I checked it. Its back to 10.4 now.

Didnt think GFO would have sucks my alk down that fast but I guess so.

I also seem to get faster growth when im over 9 for alk.

I have raised my dKH by 5 in one day and never had a problem as long as you add slow. I keep mine at 10.5 and my clams suck that s*** dry.
