When should I step in?

I've a 12 year old Pajama Cardinal with one eye completely bulged out. Fish still eats and cruises around the tank seemingly normally....

At what point should I step in and 'end it' for this long time fish friend?

Is a preferred means still to dip it into a cup of water or so, and then put it in the freezer?

I would let nature take its course. I have seen fish with empty eye sockets and they do fine. I would not want to second guess myself if I put him down without giving him a chance. However, if the fish no longer eats, is weak and not swimming and getting tortured by tankmates, then I intervene. But that's just meeh :D

Many POP eyes are from injury and will heal if given time. My clown has had this twice from running into the rockwork from some stress. Twice it's healed itself.

One of my clowns has a bad eye and has had it for around five years. She is very happy and does well as the dom. clown fish . They spawn all the time.

12 years...Wow, congrats on your excellent husbandry. It's tough to lose a good friend. I'm sure you'll make the right decision, whatever it is.

Thanks All for the replies......

I suppose I'll just let it be, although I can't imagine that the eye could ever heal itself..... It's SOOO far out there. Maybe eventually it will just separate and fall out.....
