When to add algae eaters?

I have a brand new reef tank. Sandbed and rocks in tank with internal circulation only and light cycle going on at the moment. No animals at the moment. I have noticed purple algae beginning to form on rocks that had none before. When do I need to add algae eaters to the tank? Only when I begin to have a problem or do I add a few now as a preventive measure? Thanks.

How long has the tank been set up? It sounds pretty early for you to have coraline algae growing, I would assume it's cyano or something similar. As far as your clean up crew, you can start adding them once the Nitrite and Ammonia in the tank is undetectable and the cycle has completed.

The tank has been in its current shape for 3 weeks. I had 180lbs of dried out live rock that I put in the tank. Prior to this and in a seperate tank I had two pieces of good live rock sitting in circulating water for about a month. Once the 125g reef tank was constructed, I transfered over the 75gallons of seeded water and two good rocks. Now the previously white bleached-out looking rocks are getting purple spots on them.
