I added a small yellow coris wrasse to my tank 2 weeks ago yesterday and have not seen it since it hit the sand 2 mins later . The only other fish in the tank are a pair of osc. clowns and a firefish . The fish looked healthy and fat at the fish store . I know they can hide for awhile when first added , but at what point should I consider it gone . I wake up everyday , hoping today will be the day it shows face .

wrasse are awesome fish... i have a lunare and i love this guy. please dont give up! i love my guy and hes always out and nice so hopefully he will come out and join the party soon. i did have a blue trigger which was my favorite fish for 8 months but he was just so shy i hardly ever saw him

Thanks for the response . I love wrasses . I have others in another tank , but have never had one stay under over a week .

He will show, mine stayed burried in the sand for almost 3 wks then out he came one day, been doing great ever since.

Im in the same boat with a leopard wrasse I added last week. I have not seen him once since he hit the sand, but Im sure he is still around. Hopefully he will make a showing sometime soon.

What do they do once they hit the sand? Don't they eat during that time period? If so, aren't they out just at a time when you can't see them? Am I missing something?

Wrasses have their own 'internal clock'...it may still be on a different schedule than yours, and that's why you don't see him...but they do tend to hide in the beginning.

Don't lose hope my friend, I have a swales basslet (I know it's not a wrasse) that I thought was long gone. I didn't see it for 9 months and one day I was moving around some rock and a little fish darted out. There he was! I couldn't believe it. I have no idea what he was eating but he was fat and happy. I now see him out and about every day.

Something similar happened with my gold assessors. They hid in the rock for 2 weeks. I was sure they were dead because I hadnt seen them eat. But low and behold one day they both came out and are out often.

i lost a wrasse in my 12G hospital tank for about 8 months. my little boy would tell me he seen a fish in there, i didnt believe him. popped up one day, suprised the heck out of me!! they can go for extended times without coming out of the sandbed.

How did it live for 8 months? Were you still feeding it?

I wouldn't be too concerned. I've found that most sand dwelling wrasses will come out of the sand before they die. Sorry to sound morbid, but a missing fish in my mind is MUCH better than a dead fish in plain view.

Lastly, there's been no spike in ammonia or nitrates since adding the fish, right? That would be another way to tell.
