My wife just came up and was telling her about your situation, as it mimics ours to a t! I am sorry about your losses. I hope yours doesn't do as ours did, but I got tired of it as there was nothing else I could do and it kept on and kept on happening.
I dosed the tank and sump. I left the fish in there, dosed with the Cupramine for a month and a half, just took out the carbon in the chain of filters via turning it off and didn't run it. That is how I found out how fast Marineland carbon gets Cupramine out. I actually called Seachem on this one directlly as I was extremely leery of doing that to the main tank. The one thing I "thought" it would do as a positive was to rid the tank of any tiny aptasia I had at the time(which it did for sure). There was a lot of die off and the thing with the Cupramine is that you "can" keep your skimmer running so that the skimmer catches that die off and doesn't recycle too bad. I shut the nitrate reactor off for two weeks and basically reseeded the tank with microbacter and biofuel. The ich wiped out everything except my blue spot goby, some blue legs and ironically a pink tip BTA piece that has just shot off it's first baby about a week ago. Do I suggest that, it depends on the person and their frustration level. I had had it with ich and it killing everything. I did dips, I did out of tank treatments, hypo salinity, changing temperature, everything that I could possibly find documented and I just had had it, so I said to my wife, and I remember, she was like "what are you waiting for, just do it".. So, I effectively killed off my tank and it broke our hearts, but we had been battling it for two houses that we were in and also every since I set up my 75. It is nothing but an uphill and frustrating battle that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy..
But, running it that way was extremly depressing, as it took months for me to feel comfortable putting my first corals back in there. I did use the time to our advantage and learned a "TON" on this stupid problem that plagues us to death.. But, I/we used the time to get quite a few fish and basically treat them all, and for the entire month duration, I made sure every day that the level was right. That was my goal, and I did it.
Now, and nothing against anyone, but I told and my wife knew that I had always been into corals and not too into fish, but I had grown into a fish and coral keeper, and as it turned out, with me messing with them and her watching them grow, she started liking corals also.. So we made the decision(extremely difficult one) to do no more tangs as at first it was a powder brown that started it, then a false/psuedo yellow(which are my favorite of them all due to their shape and disposition) and lastly a powder blue. I began looking and reading up on fish much more in depth! And tangs for my experience are not for my tank as much as I love them.
We have upkept wrasse', sharks, rays, etc since that time. We now have 5 pj cardinals, a foxface, a niger trigger, a striped damsel, that original bluespot goby, a yellow jaw goby, one green chromis(which I don't even call green as he is blue/green now) and well over 15 species of coral in that tank doing great(from xenia to sps frags that started out as a tiny little piece and now, a month later look like little trees, to a beautiful little blue clam). We lost a few firefish due to a lunar that got fat and became an attacker, and my shark(bamboo) that did the same when I switched foods.
But the point dude, is that sometimes it looks the most horrible right before you strike platinum! It didn't seem like it at the time, but that was the best thing I did(on many levels) as horrific as it was and may sound. I also as crazy as it sounds, switched salts and suppliment brands, which in itself has made an insane difference in such a short amount of time that it's almost scary..
But Cupramine is a very different copper product and there is no guarantee ever and maybe I am lucky, but this process along with the things I mentioned before have been good to us. Ask your girl what she thinks. My wife had become soo heartbroken as she was the reason I started a new tank in the first place again, that we had spent soo much on fish and lost them, to restock them, to have it crop up and kill over and over again. Is it the most humane or pleasant thing to do as there is tons of life that you never see until it's gone, but sometimes, you have to start from scratch so to speak. It didn't hurt that the bacteria of the nitrate filter probably honestly was more mature, therefore further established and easier multiply once that copper was out of the tank, but it still takes a while to get it back to reef ready..
Good luck to you my friend and our hearts are with you, as we have truly, truly been there. But watch your breeds, your supply of animals(nothing against anyone, but the truth is the truth), your parameters and alsoo see what you can do to minimize the chance of it happening once again. I just spent 30.00 on 30ml of garlic less than a month ago and before that, about a month before, I upgraded to an oversized uv unit, I have switched completely from live foods(except on special occasions) to medicated foods/pellets during quarantine to vitamin enhanced and garlic enhanced food on a daily basis. I am terrified if ich ever krept back in again and it's killing my not doing tangs or angels, but if that is what is required, then it is what it is..
