Looking for Maxima and/ Crocea clams, preferred to be aquacultured clams (not necessary to be ORA).

Please give me all of you reccomendations, as well please tell me where NOT to buy from.

Thanks

If you don't want to worry about shipping, you're 1.5 - 2 hours away from Kee's Aquarium in Utica. It's a smaller, mom and pop store with a decent saltwater section. They just started carrying clams and last 2 times I was there they had 6 or 7 nice ones. You might want to call and see what they have and possibly drive out there if you dont want to order.
I have to give them props because its a really great store and they treat their customers very well. I've been shopping there for at least 10 years.

On the other hand, you're minutes away from Preuss Animal House in Haslett. They sometimes have small 1" - 1.5" clams. But I have personal issues with them - poor service, dyed corals, and they will charge you more depending on whether they think you'll spend the $.

I would agree that Clamsdirect is an awesome place.

Barry has very good livestock, his shipping and packaging is great too. Just for example, he emailed me on delivery and asked if everything was in order. We chatted for a bit on acclimation and a couple of days later, a thank you card appears in the mail.

Never had that experience before and the clams are still happy and growing.

I highly recommend him and his company.

harboraquatics.com------Indiana, if you're local, I'd highly reccomend stopping by, I've been there many times and it's by far the biggest collection of clams I've seen besides barry's!!!!

Good luck!

Oh, and stay away from reefermadness.us

I've heard nothing but bad things about those clams, and plus they are wild... and more difficult to care for!

Hello all, I have another question to add to this.

I have a 29 gallon reef tank that is roughly three and a half years old. I have successfully kept a sqaumosa clam for just over a year with no problem. I have just recently upgraded my lights to a 175 MH 10K AB bulb on PFO probe start ballast. I am still acclimating the light to the tank and I am currently at three hours on / one off and slowly progressing to full acclimation. I also have a 2x75 watt VHO URI superactinic light setup coming soon for actinic supplementation.

Now my question. Since I now have adequate light, a stable reef, three years experiance and sucess with a squamose, I feel I am ready to keep a thriving Maxima or Crocea. But, which should be first? I would like to add two more clams (within a few months of each other) in total with the squamose giving me three.

Any suggestions on which to get? Also, I am ordering the giant clams book shortly.

Thanks everyone.

I'd definetly go with a maxima first... Seems like you've been putting it off for a while... My 29 is 11 months old now, and I've got a squammy, derasa, maxima's and even a teardrop<-----Hard stuff....

I'd just try both.. I'm sure you can handle it...

i agree with lebowski, just get a couple of each. croceas and maximas are awesome! i have 26 cams and just cant stop!!!!!!

i always get my clams from my local guy but in south florida there are always clams available for some reason. if i was going to get clams online i would definitaly go with barry at clams direct. i hear he is really cool and he has amazing clams!

I just checked with Kee's in Utica and they said that most of their clams are collected from the wild :( One of their wild maximas was just amazing looking too.
They did have a couple of decent cultured ones though.
