Where do 'Big Tank' guys get your corals

I have a 340.. and I get most of my corals from the LFS. They get some cherry pieces in but are super small and look even smaller when I get them into my 340.

Where do you guys get bigger corals?

I have patience... but a tank full of 1" frags looks crazy in a 340 gallon tank... LOL...

My tank is SPS dominated, so I have patience...
When I read the TOTM, most are under 5 years old.. I find it hard to believe that they all started with frags... LOL

Most of those TOTM's probably out grew their smaller tanks. That is why I am upgrading to a 300g from my 120. My sps and other corals are out growing the current tank.:D

I started my 400 with all frags. It has not yet been 2 years and some of those sps frags are nearly 2 feet across now. It doesn't take as long as you might think.

I agree LOTUS...It's hard to believe that all these Big reef guys started with Frags...especially since you need deep pockets anyway to have a BIG reef...lol. But you never know..I'm sure that some have grown their current corals from frags. It's just hard to say which. But to answer your original question, I don't think you were looking for Coral suppliers but here goes anyway... Dr. Mac and Sons offer some good corals frags mostly. I can also personally recommend Extreme Corals.
hope this helps!

How's this?

Thats a good point, off topic a bit but why do you think that is the case?

a. People upgrade every 5 years or so?

b. Old tank syd?

c. Start to let the upkeep drop?

d. Move?

other ideas?

I'd think that after 5 years of maintaining a nice reef people will be less likely to jump on RC all the time and post pics. Also, many peoples' tanks' get noticed via a build thread or something of the sort, which means its a newer system. Even the "older" build threads that still surface in the Large Tank Forum are only a few years old at most.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fun and challenge of the building process. Think about how much fun we have designing and building systems....once a tank reaches TOTM status, there usually is not nearly as much to tinker with, and I'm guessing (as I'll likely never reach this status) you kinda ask where do you go from there? So you see a lot of TOTM winners (like SunnyX for example), tear down their TOTM and start a new project.

untamed, what lights do you run?

I'm running 6 x 250W 13K with 6 x 54W T5 Actinics. The tank is 6' x 4', so you I need 6 MH to cover that kind of area.

On the other topic...my tank ain't getting torn down anytime soon. I expect my tank will have a life of about 15 yrs. It's end will probably come when we decide to sell our home.

Your better off buying from other reefers. It has been my experience, and have read others say, that buying larger wild caught SPS do not adjust well to aquarium life. You can also choose corals that have a fast growth rate. I have a beautiful orange cap that I got about 3". A yr later it is almost 1' across!!

Untamed, I will admit that is some impressive growth. DAMN!... Wish my SPS would/ could grow like that

Anyway, I do get some of my corals from friends, but we have a couple LFS gets in some of the more exotic (slow growers). They are small and kinda affordable. ORA puts out some great frags, but you tend to pay for it.

I try not to get wild caught colonies, since I know they are more delicate. With the exception of 2, all of my colonies are captive.
