Where do petco fish come from?

Ya, I too was a little surprised at their 15-day guarantee. It's as good as Live Aquaria, and better than other online retailers. Hell, I can't get 24 hours from my LFS. This is definitely a risky fish, no matter where you get them from. It's been one of those fish that I've always wanted, even before I ever had a tank. I've just never wanted to take the risk spending a lot of money on one. I saw the deal and couldn't pass it up. I plan on keeping him isolated for a while to make sure he's fat and happy before I transfer him to my display. This could be a very good thing and might bring a little competition to the big retailers. I'll take some pic's of him tomorrow after work, so hopefully you'll be able to see the quality...

I've purchased a few fish and frags from the local Petco over the years and had great luck with them. Their sales are awesome. They recently had royal grammas for $12. Wish I had room for one.

Our local PetCos get marine fish from ORA, especially clowns. They also use the same major distributors that supply most LFS. The original fish/corals/etc. are not bad at PetCo, though individual stores seem to have issues with their tanks and setup.

By the way, every 15 gallon tank has a large system behind it, total water volume isn't the issue here. Out of five PetCos I go to, three are very good, one is hideous and one is outstanding. Pricing on sales is always good, dollar a gallon tanks, inexpensive (though undersized) clowns, $6 condy anemones last week...

The regal is still shy, so he hides when I get close to the glass. I got a pic of him in his spot though. Not the best, but you get the idea. He's doing good, eating pellets and shrimp. I'll try and get a pic of him out and about if he'll let me. His colors are so much brighter in the direct light. Here is all I have for now though...

They did give me the option and I chose the Indo-Pac version based on the price. As we've said, its a very risky fish (maybe more so coming from Petco), and I wasn't willing to take such a risk on a pricier fish. If this one fares well, I'll hopefully pair him up with a Red Sea regal when I upgrade tanks in the future. Either way, he's still a beautiful fish, with or without the orange belly. I'll keep you updated....

i was at petco last night... saw a dead scopas tang.

edit: correction, the scopas tang was dying. lying on its side gill plates moving but it was looking pretty done for. the store guy actually noticed as I was looking at some of the dry selection as I walked past to get some salt mix. He promptly removed the fish even before asking me if there was something he could sell me. I admired that. I actually bought my clown fish at Petco and they are doing great. They didnt sit in the tank at Petco long only half the morning before they got acclimated to some clean water in my tank.

i work at the petco in baton rouge, and we have up to 10 different places, we even have some lfs buy are fish when we have sales because are prices are so good, and we sale them for what they pay, and not every petco is the same when it comes to fish care, i will agree that some dont know what they are doing and telling people to do.

Interesting, just did a Google search for Petco fish and it said 30 day alive guarantee. If the fish in fact do come straight from the distributor and it is priced right and packaged well on all orders this could be really good i think! I am really interested hearing the progress of this Regal. That's a pretty risky purchase from petco. Tagging along, thanks for the info guys

Edit: 15 days for marine, not bad, same as live aquaria

Sent from my drooooooid.

it should only be on freshwater fish only, am sure

At the physical store locations there is no guarrentee on marine livestock but when you order on line their site states this :
PETCO's commitment to our customers: All freshwater
fish purchased at PETCO.com is guaranteed to stay alive for 30 days from the day it arrives at your home or we will gladly refund your money. All marine species, live rock and plants are guaranteed for 15 days from delivery.

hey man, i just bought a bluejaw trigger from the petco on seigen on Monday. petco prices are a lot cheaper and even more so when they have that Pals sale. can yall special order fish there for customers if they're willing to pay in advance? can yall get a small clown trigger?

Exactly. I have 2 local to me that take far better care of their fish than 2 of my LFS. One of my LFS is headed by a marine biologist, yet the tanks are mats of red slime, dead, fish, the worst equipment is sold, and prices are through the roof.

If your local Petco is not giving at least decent conditions to the fish department, write a letter to the local store and Petco national headquarters. If they do nothing, simply do not shop that store. Enough people point things out to them, they will take notice.

Most Petcos systems suck and that is the major problem. They use a MARS bio wheel system with a crappy way under sized skimmer, at most stores. I worked at a test store that had a very good setup. Fish system had a 100 gallon remote sump with trickle filter, RC2 skimmer, sand filter and MH UV sterilizer. Reef system was separate hand its own sump with an AquaC 120 and T5 lighting. Softies and lps did well as did inverts. There was a Live Rock tank with an AquaC EV 150 and 150w MH. We had a 2 90 gallon corner tanks set up for salt water. One was a reef and the other was a swim tank. Both had sumps and Super Skimmers 65s. But when I left the whole thing went to hell. I was the only one that know how to run the systems and knew anything about keeping corals. They took down and sold the 2 90 gallons. I had brought in many of my own frags to put in that reef tank and spent a lot of time to get it in shape as it was in a poor state when I got there. Petco sucks.
