I just got 1 polyp of purple hornet and want it to thrive and grow to a colony. I just got it on wednesday and have it on the bottom 1/3 of my tank under 2 150watt 14K phoenix bulbs but its been 2 days and its not fully opened just half way. I just wanted to know where u guys have your purple hornets in your tank and under what kind of lighting?? Thx.

I tried 5 polyps of the blue hornets and they all ended up dying within a week and a half. The hornets have a very low success rate right now. Mine seemed to do best about 8-10 inches under my 400w mh light. I tried placing some lower in the tank and they wouldn't open. Hope you have better luck that I did.

Holy cow.. that stinks. It seems like people had them with a whole lotta light.. is that accurate.. I had assumed they were just like any other zoos?

they are very sensitive to nitrates, ive noticed that when my nitrates are at 20 they wont open up, when i do a 20% water change they open and floress as they were flowers. so i do water changes every three days of 7 to 10 gallons. and they are place on the tip top of my reef under 2 250 watt mh 15k. i spot feed them every other day with diluded zoomax expert series and magnesium should not be to high. ive noticed when i dose magnesium they close up for the whole day and wont open till the day afterthen the rest of the week they are fine. mine thrive i have blues and purples
