Where Do You Get Your DT's?

Is there any local Nashville shop that has DT’s Phytoplankton that is not completely dead when you get it? I have bough a few bottles over the last three months and every time I open them, they smell like they have been left in the sun for a week. Is there an online supplier that I would have better luck with?

Lots of people use this company. They always support the frag swaps and give a nice donation every year. I have used some of there products and loved them. I wouldn't mind getting some live pods since I now have 2 mandarins to feed! I think they also do club or group discounts if you meet certain quanities. I have purchased DT's locally and mine never smelled real bad that I noticed but I have heard you can't leave them out at rome temp. very long it can spoil them.

I forget the site, but there's one that has some info on DT's about shakin' it up every week or so. I think all the bottles are suppose to have a exp. date on them.

I got mine from the Critter...don't know if it's SUPPOSED to smell that foul, but it surely does! [/QUOTE

It's not suposed to. Actually you are supposed to throw it away if it does. I personally would take it back if it smelled like that.

This makes 2 things I know of bought from AC lately that were fouled up.

Mikeyjer,.... care to chime in on this one?

I got some from the Critter a few months back, and it didn't 'stink'. Jack, I'd take it back. I've found that they don't keep track of their expiration dates very well.

We personally switched to Bioplankton by Liquid Life, it's a concentrated phyto ( dt's without the water ) and lasts for a long time, appox a year. Store it in the freezer, and the reccomended dosage is 1/4- 1/2 a pump per 100g on a new or avg stocked reef and 1 full pump on a stocked reef. The also offer a Cyclopeeze clone, in a bottle similar that you keep in the freezer as well. They both come out like toothpaste, and disolve once they hit the water.

I get mine from Premium Aquatics. The shipping is cheap, and they get it from DT's direct and its only a one day ship to them. I just bought two bottles, both have expirations in June. The first bottle did not smell bad. It will always have a pungent odor, but if it STINKS like death then it was left out, and I have heard that retail stores are notorious for not refrigerating it right away when it arrives.

I bought formula 2 from critters and it smell like rotten egg. I took it back and they replaced it right away. He took out all the formula 2 and sent them back for replacement. They've been defrosted and refrozen, that's the reason why. I've been buying formula 2 for over 2 years now and that's the first time it's ever happened. IF something smells bad, I wouldn't use it......

Guess what I do right after posting last night? Dose by tank with DT's watch an hour of a movie. Turn the tank back on. Guess what I found this morning. My DT's sitting on the tank shelf above the tank. A full bottle. GRRRRRR. Its the big size too. That stuff is expensive. Its probably ruined.. that sucks, oh well.

I called DT's this morning and they told me that 8 hours unrefrigerated would not hurt it in a serious way, and as long as it was returned to the fridge right away it was still good product. Great company they were happy to talk to me about a simple problem.

Does anyone use DT’s Oyster eggs? From what I have read on the DT’s site, it is supposed to be good stuff but at $20 / oz it is some what cost prohibited. Is it worth it?

I used some at one time and everythign seemed to love them. It's not the easiest to find around here. The last time I bought some from an LFS, it looked like it, too, had likely been allowed to thaw, then was refrozen... They've (Croal magazine) done studies on frozen foods and found that American frozen foods for fishes are loaded with all kinds of deadly bacteria (they seem to concentrate on how American frozen food companies -or whatever else they can knock- are so horrible, so take it as you will). I like Croal magazine, but there certainly seems to be huge egos involved in the articles and they don;t typically think Americans know what reef tanks are... Just my impression... I'll keep subscribing, though, because they have some good scientific type articles when they (primarily Knop) leave their opinions out. That being the case, if anything is allowed to thaw and refreeze, it could create problems. I've been using Reed Nutrition foods like Arctipods and love them. Jenn left a big bottle out for 6 hours and it got to room temp. I asked Randy at Reed Nutrition about it and he said it was one of their least perishable items, so there wouldn't be any problems.

I use it. I get it from the Critter. You only use just a little bit at a time, and I only use it a couple of times/week, so for me a single container lasts about a year.
