Where do you put your probe?

Hi again Randy,

Do you think it makes any difference if the pH probe is placed in the aquarium, the overflow, or the sump?

I have been keeping my pH probe submersed in the aquarium. After reading your article on pH meters I am wondering if I have ruined the probe by submersing it. This is the probe I am using:

Thank you very much,

The location should not matter unless there are additives being put in nearby. I have mine (ORP and pH) in the dark sump to avoid algae on them. I would not usually submerse a pH probe all the way, although a few are designed for that. I'd hang it into the water with the bottom 1-2" covered and the remainder out of the water. Especially keep the wires out in case they develop a pinhole.

what I did with mine was cut a piece of styrofoam out, make a hole for the ph probe and let it float. Works great for the last year, and the top does not submerse.
