Does anyone now where to buy a
T. Gigas. I want one 4" or larger and have been uable to find any. Please help me out. Thanks:eek1:

fish safari in virginia beach had one the last time i checked. i don't know if they ship or not, they are a LFS. his handle here on RC is captainsafari or something like that.

I haven't seen one at the wholesalers in over 4 years and it is the first thing I look for when I walk in everytime. They say they come in periodically but can never predict when the will arrive. If I saw some I would buy 12. I am sure I could sell them in no time.

I personally watn them for two 400 gallon aquariums and a couple 180's. If they get too big for them I guess I will have some friends over for clam chowder.

I want this clam for my 150 reef and my goal was to grow him out huge, when he got too large I would move him to his own custom tank. I think it would be cool to have a clam for 10 or 20 years who knows how long. SOUND VERY COOL, what do all of you think.

Actually I would also probably add a custom tank to my system for one of the Gigas as well in its own tank. That would be pretty sweet. I am already adding a tank just for a few mangroves that will be in front of a window with the mangroves growing out of the tank.

I will put a post out in this forum if I ever get them. Its really weird. I used to see 4-6 inchers that would sell for $60-80 all the time. Sometimes they would have 12-16 inch ones as well. Now they are almost not existant. I believe that most of the farmed ones are being sold to the asian market to be used as food, not aquarium specemins. One day I wil get some.

I have been looking for about a year. In that time I have seen a few(less than 10) for sale. All of them were fairly large already(8"+). That doesn't help me because I want to grow mine out from around 3".

When I find one and it ends up getting too big for my tank, which will be a 225 in a few months, I will probably donate it to a zoo or a large public aquarium.

Gary, I totally understand why you ask that question. I don't think most people realize these clams can get up to 54". That is just HUGE. It would be very difficult to keep a full grown gigas at the hobbiest level. The Ca/Alk and nutrient requirements would be tremendous for a clam that size. It would also require a very large tank with thick sealed top so it doesn't literally blow the top off when "coughs".

What are the lighting requirements for a gigas?
I just picked one up about 7-8". I have halides over one tank and vho-pc 300watts over my other. I'd have more room in the vho-pc tank and would rather keep it in there.

I saw a large gigas in a 90 gal. It must have been 24" or more. The tank had 2 400W sakis and vho. I know big gigas need a lot of light. The clam eventually went to the columbus zoo. I have not seen one for sale in years.
