Where to look?

I have been hearing this "clicking" noise for months now and have spent countless hours prowling around at night with my flashlight and have set several different "traps" to try to catch a mantis.I have NEVER seen it,just guessing it is a mantis because of the loud "clicking" everybody tells me is a mantis.I have a 125 gallon reef with 180 pounds of live rock and 240 pounds of sand,so ther are plenty of hiding places.I have his location(I think) narrowed down to the left side of my tank. Are there any clues as to what to look for so I can get at least a look at this thing?I also have 2 engineer gobies,so the sandbed is constantly changing.

it could be a pistol shrimp... just because it's clicking doesn't mean that it's a mantis....

Good luck either way

Ok,where to look for a pistol shrimp then?I have been looking and looking and have not seen anything but tons of pods and some small starfish and some WEEEEEEEEEEE little shrimp looking things(about 1/32 of an inch long,if not smaller).

Pistols and mantis' pretty much hide in the same territory, under the rock, in the sand, or in crevices/burrows in the rock. Different species have different preferences but they're highly adaptable.

If you really want to see whatever it is start an after dark buffet. Every night rubberband a small piece of food to a rock and put it in the same place on the sandbed. You'll train whatever it is that there's free food for the taking. You might be surprised at the critters that will come out for a free meal :eek1: .
