I have a skeleton of a coral that I grew a while ago. I want to know its name so that I can have another. Where can I send a bleached skeleton sample for ID?
Are you serious? I always hear "Only way to ID a coral is to snip a section, bleach it, and look at it under a microscope," and now people are telling me that even that doesn't work?
After that, its a lot of practice and work. Realizing that some species are a little more common than others, just like dogs and cats. And others, you just won't see ever.
Here is an old thread to get you started in literally a "hobby within a hobby".
Could also look for colleges with marine biology dept. and specialization in reef/coral biology and see if that dept. would be willing to work with your skeleton on a possible ID
You are correct in your thoughts that the best and most accurate way to ID SPS corals is by skeletal ID. However, I don't know where you'd send it. I'd maybe send a message to WWM or Dr Fosters and Smith and ask them.
You best choice is to pick up the books and CD by Cardin Wallace, she is by far the best there is when ID'ing the Acropora species. Veron is okay but not better than Wallace. Some of the stuff is close but Veron and Wallace disagree on some species and some of the groupings.
