Which HOB skimmer? Your choice between...

I've been using the Octopus for two years and have had great results. I used a Remora on another tank I have, although it was an earlier version, but the results weren't as reliable.

I did a similar upgrade: CSS65 to an Octopus. However, I got a diff Octopus model... the BH-1000. I didn't particular notice much of a difference in skimming. My reasons for changing up was for noise and removing the pump from the tank... unfortunately, the pump (OTP-1000) is pretty loud... but in the model you're considering, the pump is underwater, so hopefully that makes a (positive) difference.

I have thew octopus hang on back and it is by far the best skimmer I have. I also have cpr bak-pak=junk, the aqua c remora is pretty good. But the octopus is more bang for the buck hands down.

Great!, thanks for the replies. I will look further into the octo skimmer, it seems to be the favorite. I was hoping they were closer in performance because the AquaC will fit behind my tank the way it sits, if I go with the octo I will have to move my stand out from the wall about a half inch :rolleye1:

Oh well, if its worth it, its worth it.;)

I don't think the 1/2 inch is really that much of a big deal since it is only a 55. Now if it was bigger then thayt woulkd pose a problem. Just my .02

I've had my BH-300f (on a 72g) for a little over a year and I am definitely satisfied with its performance. Currently, the holding cup fills up about 2-3(max) times a day with a light green tea colored skimmate.

Anyone suggest this skimmer yet?

I believe that this is the best HOB around, and if you have the extra money it would be fine on up to 100-125gal with a moderate bioload. It may be a tad overkill for a 55gal, but if you buy now and upgrade to a larger tank in the future, your skimmer would be able to stay. The SWC is the original version of the Reef Octo 800s, which was built poorly and used a pump that was WAY too powerful. SWC had the design in the works and Reef Octo tried to make a version of it too soon. The SWC is the best of the best as far as HOB goes. I'd say that it's on par with the ATB Multi-Use Cone skimmer, which can be run as HOB, yet not as efficient as in sump.
