Which is the quietest return pump??

I am looking for a quiet submersible pump for my return to my 450 reef. I do not have a drilled sump, so I need it to be submersible. I was considering the Mag drive pumps, any recommendations on the quietest out there with about 1800gph flow????

If you want quiet, dont get a mag. A 450g is big. I assume you have at least two overflows and returns. How big is the sump? I would get two Eheim 1262s.

before i read your thread i was sayin' to myself: "of all thre return pumps ive owned over the years the MJ's are the best for quietness and reliability."

sjm817, thanks for the reply. I was also thinking the 2 Eheim's. My sump is a 150g AGA. I do have 2 overflows, and had a Quiet One 9000 on there. The flow was about 1900gph wide open and the 2" drains could hardly handle the flow. Besides that the pump was very loud! I have a reeflo 250 skimmer, and couldn't even hear the Baldor on that!!!

yes sjm817, if they are return pumps the 1800 MJ's would be OK and i would immagine he would have inner tank flow also, not just 2 X's 1800GPH including head loss for total circulation,
correct?
i definatly would, mainly to create suface breakage for the overfows and to help keep the pH at a reasonable level.

In the GPH you are looking for, there really isn't much for submersibles. I think the 2 x Eheims would work very well.

How much flow do you want?

Eheim 1262 is a nice pump.

Iwaki is probably my favorite external.

You could use an external sump pump, even though your sump is not drilled. Up over the top.

How would I use an external pump? Wouldn't I have to prime it all the time?
I have plenty of flow in the tank, I am not that concerned about flow through the sump, 3x tank water volume/hour should be fine....right?
Thanks!

FLow in the tank is about 10500gph now without the return pump(s) running. Since I have about 450lbs of live rock in there, I'd estimate about 350 gallons in the 450g display....so that's about 30x turnover per hour in the display without even considering the return pumps....

I would agree on the double 1262. They are quiet and last a long time. Ive had one on a FW tank for 15 yrs now
