if you had a choice b/t these 2 lens which one would you get for a canon rebel XT

Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens
f/Stop Range 4-32
Minimum Focus Distance 13.8" (35 cm)
Magnification 1:5

Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro Autofocus Lens
f/Stop Range 2.8-22
Minimum Focus Distance 7.9" (20 cm)
Magnification 1:2.3

I need the lens for normal everyday pics, some @ night and the tank

If you have better option then the two i have listed please let me know..

Thanks

From what I've read the Sigma is significantly better than the Canon. Just going by the specs it's significantly better- faster and more magnification.

so for some just learning the sigma is better option right..
its cheap by 100$..

But the canon has the IS and th e new USM motor..

for a begginer the simga is good walk anound lens.. Right???

Thax for ur help.. :)

id go with the sigma

the smal, ler f stop will help you alot.
Specially with shooting in dark situations

most definitly go with the sigma.

dont become a canon only type.

ive got a sigma 28-300 3.5 - 5.6 macro II
superb, not to sharp on the 300 side

but superb lense.

We got the XT with the EF-S 17-85 lens from www.bhphotovideo.com and we love it. It's a great lens for everyday use and to take on vacation. Takes clear, colorful shots, and the built-in image stabilization works great. I've even used it to take pictures of the critters in my tank. At some point soon I'll upload some of them.

agrusczak post some of our close up shots.. Please..
i am planning to buy from BH as well.. :)

Re: Which lens would you get... (Please help me pick)

I'm not sure about the Sigma but I do know about the Canon 17-85. In my opinion, it's a glorified 18-55 kit lens with IS and better range but still shows significant barrel distortion (image bows out like a barrel) at the wide end and shows significant CA (chromatic aberrations or purple fringing) even at f4.

If I were you, I'd go with a 50mm 1.4 prime and if you want to get the macro shots, I'd go with a 100mm 2.8 macro lens or if you want, you can explore the possiblity of the canon efs 60mm macro which has a shorter reach but is really tack sharp.

If you are looking for a zoom, the new Canon efs 17-55mm f2.8 may be of interest to you but at that price point, you're better off with a 16-35mm 2.8L or a 24-70 2.8L.

When shooting in available light situations (no flash), you'll need a lens with a larger "f-stop". Think of it this way, the smaller the number (i.e. f1.4, f2.8, f4), the larger the lens aperature can open to suck in available light and thus will allow you to shoot at slightly higher shutter speeds (you'll need if you shooting moving fish).

Remember that your rebel xt (also 20D and 30D) have crop factors of 1.6. This means that your 17-55mm lens will actually be a 27.2-88mm lens.

When you buy online, buy your stuff from a respectable online dealer like www.bhphotovideo.com. They have an awesome return policy and great customer service.
