Which of these would you buy

I am in need of a new camera, I have seen the Nikon in action and it does well but wanted to come to the experts.

Canon - EOS Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-22 zoom lens
or
Nikon - 10.2MP D40X Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5 - f/5.6 ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens

Which of the two would you buy?

I'd buy the Canon because, like the rest of their 60% market share, I prefer them. :)

The answer to your question is, which ever one feels best in your hands and the one who's controls you prefer. Both are excellent entry level cameras when used properly.

I say Nikon D40x. I made this same choice about a month ago. for me the Nikon fits into my child sized hands well, and I found it to be more intuitive then the canon.

If worse comes to worse buy one of each from a place that offers a 10 day return period and try them out.

Thanks for the replies, so far all the reviews are good for both. The Lens with the canon is the only complaint, I like the Nikon because of the memory card, the canon uses the compact flash which I find is old technology. I am heading to the store tomorrow to play with them to see which one I like.

I'd go with the canon just for my prospects up upgrading later on. I currently have the 350d and its a great camera. Can't wait until I save up enough for the 40d.

Just got back with the Nikon D40x, so far it is a nice camera. I will work on some picture and post them later

good choice...i just picked up a d40 great camera. it was between that on a rebel xt. rebel just felt cheap to me, and nikon has bigger screen.

Thanks, I am amazed at how great the pictures turned out in atuo mode. I can not wait to get into manual. The emperor picture is the best I have ever take of him, his color patern always messed up my old camera

I considered both and went with the Pentax K10D...between those two tho, I'd chose the Canon.

I'm considering the K10D. How do you like it so far?

I would go for the Nikon cause it usually feels better. Canon non Pro bodies always feel a a lot cheaper.
On the kit lense I remember reading a lot of complaints from the canon side where the Nikon kit lenses (18-55 18-70 18-135 ) are reportedly sharper.
On the cards thing I believe the pro cameras would go for compact flash because their faster (at least the older models) harder to loose because of the bigger size, easier to manipulate and i wold guess sturdier than the SD... cards. The Nikon pro models would work with CF.

I have a K10D and love it. For the money you cant get anything even close. It won the 2007 TIPA award for best Expert Class Digital SLR which is a category where the average price of camera is 2k, and you can pick up a K10D with a lens for 600-700 bucks. And I love being able to use old glass. There are alot of really good prime lens available on EBay for very little money that take amazing pictures.

One thing of note about the K10D, it is not a good camera for a beginner unless you are serious about learning how to use it. The automatic settings are very lacking, and you really need to understand exposure, etc to get good photos.

Here is a link to my Flickr page if you want to see some photos. Some were taken with a Pentax k100d before I upgraded to the K10d.
