Which pump for closed loop?

I'm trying to setup my new 100g tank for closed loop and after reading posts after posts, i'm even more confused. My closed loop includes one 1" outlet to the pump and three 1/2 inlets back to the tank from the pump. I'm looking for the most quiet and most powerful external pump for under $200. I was looking at Eheim 1262 but i'm not sure if it's strong enough. Thanks.

I'd look into panworld pumps. The 1262 won't be anywhere near powerful enough IMHO.

What are you trying to accomplish? Is your tank BB? Is this just for a little flow?

If you want tons of flow, look into a sequence dart :)

I heard good things about Sequence pumps as far as flow but how noisy are they? I'm trying to accomplish a tank without any ugly powerhead inside. I'm upgradeing from a 75g FOWLR tank to a 100g with potential to keep softies and clamps in the future.

Will you have a sand bed? If you have a sand bed, the sequence may give out too much flow (sand storm).

As far as I know, sequence darts are very quiet. I've heard a sequence tiger shark, and it was pretty loud, but were talking about a 5000+ gph pump.

The darts are advertised as one of the quietest pumps on the market.

If you want silence look into poseidon pumps . They are water cooled however, so there will be heat transferred back into your tank.

Also look into the Iwaki's with the Japanese motors. They are more expensive and more comarable to the panworlds, but they are also quiet and very powerful.

I have a sequence Dart and you have to put your ear next to it to see if it's on. The flow is awesome, but it doesn't like to be restricted. I hear Sequence makes a smaller version. Look into that. I'm sold on these things!

I'm still debating between DSB and Crushed Coral. I'm having a 4" DSB right now in my 75b but cleaning it is a pain in the rearend. I'm thinking of switching to Crushed Coral but heard bad things about it as well. After 4years in SW, I thought I have learned most of it but I was wrong.

The PanWorld pumps are very good but I would go with the Sequence pump if noise is a concern. I have one running my skimmer and it is very quiet. When I had it on a closed loop with not restriction it was almost completely silent.

Like others have already said a Sequence Dart is a good choice. I have a Sequence Dart and it is very quiet. With a closed loop and sufficient plumbing (really needs a 2" inlet) you would get about 3000 gph for about 120 Watts. I have not run one with a 1" inlet so don't know the effect however it could cause additional noise due to cavitation within the pump. If you could get the input to 2" and have about 3 1" outlets I would go with the dart. If you are planning on keeping softies and clams then that much flow is not really necessary and you would probably be fine with an Iwaki MD40RLXT Water Pump (Japanese Motor). I have one of these also; it makes more noise than the Sequence but is also very quite and I don't find the sound it does make objectionable.

I would do neither, a shallow sand bed with fine grade sand is a great option that many reefers use.

I'm selling an external Iwaki MD-100RLT pump for $200 if you're interested.

Iwaki Pump (MD-100RLT) ($200)
- Max flow 35.6 GPM
- Max head 14.1(ft)
- Flow Rate: 1986 GPH @ 6 feet of head
- Power Consumption: 385 Watts
- Size (L"xW"xH"): 12.75x 6.2x 6.9
- RLT= Pressure Applications

Hey guys... Thought I would throw in.

I have a Sequence dart. 2"in and 2 X 2" out. I have the outlets tapered down to 1.5" at the nozzles. Totally love the dart. No noise and plenty of power! I have a deep sand bed. Varies from 0 to 4.5" throughout the tank. To avoid sand storms just play with the outlet directions and rockwork. No problem! Low flow areas and high flow areas. Mine is a 120g.
