I am putting a restaurant in a building I have and am planning on building a concrete tank approx. 60 ft x 5ft deep by 3 0r 4 ft high, between 6000 to 9000 gal depending on final dimensions.Front viewing panels to be 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 acrylic[8 foot sheets]. tank will be a FOWLR setup.I checked into RK2 skimmers and like them.I want to use ozone and RK2 has ozone units designed for their machines.Problem is they are massive,9-10 feet high.Any suggestions on an ozone compatible skimmer for a tank this size but in a more compact, shorter design.System will have a dedicated sump, equipment room with ventilation for humidity contol.Tank will be covered. Thanks guys.

Jeremy,
I wrote in my post that I am planning this aquarium and I came to this sight to research commercial size protein skimmers.I have compared the features, performance, size, etc. of every commercial skimmer that I could find through reasearch on the internet and reading aquarium forums.I like the RK2 best.It is large, but I have 12 foot ceilings so it will fit.I was hopeing someone on this site would have hands on experience with commercial size skimmers so I can increase my knowledge on the subject,no matter what brand or design. This is not about liking or disliking the answers. It is about building this system right for the sake of the fish, and to not waste money on equipment that doesn't do the job.If you have any useful comments I would be glad to hear them.

Im not much help; but the largest tank ever on this forum was built by Mr. 4000 which was "only" 4000g. you are in a whole new area at 6-9000.

IMO I think your best bet is going to be multiple skimmers.

offtopic I wish you success with your restaurant. though I do hope you've figured it all out, a 6000g fish tank in a restaurant might make "breaking even" quite the challenge.

It would be a biz exp so he would be able to write alot of it off...

Have you contacted RK2 or a sales rep? I am sure if they do make commercial skimmers that they can customize to your height restriction.

Thanks guys,
I really dont want multiple skimmers for simpliciIty sake.I have called RK2,and they gave me recommendations, but I did not ask about a custum built size.I have tried to research GEO skimmers but came up empty.I'll try again.I have also called ETSS.They have an ETSS 5000 for tanks up to 10,000 gals.Really compact,1/2 the size of the RK2.I thought my problem was solved, much less expensive also. But I was told by ETSS you cannot use ozone with it.Of course they told me the ETSS skimmers they make are so efficient that ozone is not needed. At my home I have 3 tanks in series,a 500 gal acrylic and two homemade plywood-fiberglass aquariums,500 and 300 gals.Close to 1500 gal total with sump and piping,1 1/2 and 2 ich size mostly.I use a large Euroreef skimmer with an ozotech 500 ozonizer on the system for 4 years now, works fantastic.I live in Miami, have a boat and some freinds are expert collectors. If the size of this aquarrium becomes impractical,I will downsize my vision.I would be glad to hear from someone who uses ETSS skimmers. All help greatly appreciated. Thanks

You might want to try taking to Justjoe, he has a 20K gallon public aquarium. He'd probably be able to send you in the right direction as to who to get to build a skimmer for that sized tank.

http://www.atlantismarineworld.com/

Just send him a PM and he should be pretty good about getting back to you.

Good luck on your quest, and on such a large build. He might be able to give you some pointers on the thickness of the acrylic as well.

That's funny. I was going to recommend calling public aquariums for their advice and i was going to specifically recommend Atlantis Aquarium. I took a tour of the equipment room on their large display tank and I couldn't believe the size of the skimmer! It was amazing.

Contact Scott from Aquaticsystemsdesign.com - He makes amazing skimmers, reactors, and acrylic tanks.

Any clue on what the largest skimmer scott has made? We are talking about a skimmer needed with a volume probably just a large as my reef tank system, if not twice the size.

I know one of the LA wholesalers sell the commercial brand Helgoland Sander skimmers.
