Which Skimmer

Should I get the Turbofloater 5000 shorty With the Ocean Runner 3500 or Should I get a ASM g4x with no mods.

Ive got a 110 Gallon with some SPS but mostly mushrooms. And 3 large anemones. But I have a very high Bio-load.

Has anybody used either one and are they happy with it. I am leaning towards the ASM only because I can mod it (Recirc, Gate Valve, Thread Wheel, and even adding another pump all together.

Thanks

I've used Turboflotor 1000 and now have G5 on new system. Was supposed to have 4x but long story.

Either way you'll be tweaking but that's the case with any skimmer. Pound for pound, hte tweaking is a lot easier on the ASM.

Well the sump way undersized right now.but I will be adding a 40 breeder to replace my 10 gallon fuge and have enough room to add the skimmer. Im running a dual beckett right now and I am happy with it but the cost of operation is just way too high. Especially now that Com-ed is raising prices 22% at the end of the year. The Turboflotor uses less watts but is less hackable buy the way it looks. And When I buy my second house with a basement. I will go with a bigger in the wall tank. But then again everybody says that.

Is anyone else using any of the MRC skimmers? This one is the best skimmer I have used to date!
Here is the setup...

Here is the start up....

Here is the cup after 15 minutes...Notice how dark the foam already is!

Like I said This is the best skimmer I have ever used! I wish I would of had something like this in 1985 when I started reefing!
MRC are upgradable also with accessories. You may want to consider this.

I'd also suggest MRC as long as it is plumbed externally. If you are looking for in sump ASM is probably the way to go.

I am running a dual beckett skimmer now and I am really happy with it. But the 340 Watts that my Blue Line uses a lot more than 60 the ocean runner uses or the 90 the sedra uses. I also might switch from 400 watters to 250 along with replace my mag drive with a quiet one return pump. Possible sell my 1/3 hp chiller because after removing all that heat it might self regulate temp. Im not really happy paying close 200 bucks on my electrical bill almost every month.

I really want an ATI but The price is a little steep. I am getting either the Turbo or the ASM for less than 300. I also want to go as big as possible so that I can upgrade later without having to buy another skimmer, because this will be my fourth skimmer in 3 years.

I'd go with the turbofloater then. Ocean runners are great little pump and IMO I dont like the build quality of the ASM's, not to knock them...they do skim great.

IME the Oceanrunners seized up a LOT and run much noisier than the Sedras on the ASM. Moreover, the venturis on the Aquamedic are a lot more finicky and prone to jamming. While the materials on the ASM are cheaper, my thinking is this is a glorified toilet. What matters is the pump and air intake, not the material on the body of the skimmer. All that said, while I think you'd be fine with a G3 the 4x will allow for lots of expansion. If you can afford Euro-Reef they are better and better pumps but ASM is fine. I'm wondering if the new ER pumps can fit on the ASMs. Anyone know?

Doug, what's with that cheap tiny POC skimmer?

well I sold my duel beckett (to you)and now have a asm g3 its works great but I have the recircuit mod and and 2 pumps a sedra 5000 and a sedra 9000 It does a great job on my system

Get the ASM - then mod it - then you can help me mod mine!

I think mine is doing the job rather well - granted bio-load still low but seems to be doing what it is supposed to.

well said ostro. so many get into the argument about extruded or cast. whatever. i dont care if it was made of toilet paper. its all about how it works.

i have the g4 + on my 120 and like it a lot. only have the gate valve mod which is worth the 5 mins it took to put it on. its not even necessary to glue the pvc.

i have also had a euroreef and it was awesome too.

Not to hijack the thread - but maybe someone can tell me what the variuous ASM G4 mods are, what they do and how are they are to do.....

I have a asm g4x I wasn't all that impressed at first but I has had a couple of months to break in and now it really pulls some nasty skimmate also have the gate valve mod very easy to adjust with it

If you want to upgrade later than look at the accessories to MRC.
You can add 1' risers to the column chamber and go as high as you want! The hieght adjustments for foam are done w/gate valve.

NewSchool using 2 skimmers works well also. I have had to do that when height/space were issues.

im sure there are more but i know of the gate valve and the recirculating mod which i think is pretty heavily involved. the gate valve is easy to do and it makes adjusting the skimmate easier because you dont have to pull up the riser.
