I have a 50 gallon breeder tang and would like to add a tang.

Debating between a blue hippo tang or a powder blue tang.
Any suggestions?

Thanks

Uh oh.
Knew the Tang police would come.

I plan on upgrading in about a year to a bigger tank, so I've been looking at baby tangs which are about 3-4"

I have 2 perc clownfish and a watchman goby in my tank right now along with a whole bunch of corals.

What is bad is I am no where close to Tang police!!!!! :)
I have done the baby Tang in a 75 while waiting for my 240 to get ready. Was just saying if you didnt plan on upgrade then a 50 wouldnt be good for any tang

I had a hippo tang in a 55 tall...bought it when it was around 2 inches...they grow FAST...and it outgrew my tank in less than 6 months...had to disassemble the tank to get it out...

If you are upgrading in a little while, why not wait?

rfields i was just kidding around. Hope you didn't take it personally. = )
Oh man, I wish I could setup a 240 now.

Your hippo outgrew a 55 in 6 months from 2"?
How much did it grow?

My friend had a naso tang when it was 2" in a 24 gal AP and in a year only grew another 2" to about 4. Gave it away after a year.

I've talked to a few local members in the NY area and one guy had a 4" hippo tang in his 50 breeder for about a year.

Personally here??? heck no :)

Hippo 2" would be good for a 55 for a year. The only point i was trying to make was that you needed an upgrade plan because they will out grow a 55 in time, any tang will do that....... I have right now a 3/4" hippo in a 30 just by himself until i know he is ready to eat and play with others

Good to hear. ^^.

I know eventually i'll have to get him a bigger home. Just would like to add some more colors and variety.

Looking into wrasses as well, but I don't have a cover on my tank.

It grew to a little over 4in, but I did the "Wall of rock" thing and the fish couldn't get enough space to swim up to the speed it wanted to before having to slow down and turn. The 55 tall is only 36in long...in hindsight, I think the fish would be MUCH happier in a longer tank than I higher one....

A baby mimic tang might take a while to outgrow the 50 (but it would definitely do so). I don't know many other tangs besides hippos that you can get really tiny. I think I'd pass on the powder blue...

Tomini Tang.....rare and hard to get ....but fairly small for tangs. a 55 would be the min recomended size if not a 75 at least.
