I have been using the Via Aqua titanium for a little over 3 years with no problems. Very accurate even using their controller and not my Ranco.

I have used that heater also. It is very accurate. but i had two of them fail on me in the last 3 months. One "boiled" the tank and the other just stopped working. just my 2 cents.

If you need 300W of heating, then you SHOULD buy (3) 100W heaters or (4) 75W heaters.

You SHOULD plug them into a RANCO.

ALL hobby heaters are going to fail (Mostly the internal thermostats). None come anywhere close to being as reliable as a commercial temperature controller by a longshot (several orders of magnitude).

So using several small heaters will prevent a stuck thermostat on one from overheating the tank. It will also prevent a failed heater from letting the tank temp drop to fast. So why the RANCO?

With several heaters it is hard to get the thermostats set so that 1 heater does not do the brunt of the work and that the temp does not swing several degrees with each heating cycle.

Set the RANCO at your desired temp and set the heaters thermostats to a few degress above that. The RANCO will do the switching, but each heater will have a built in upper limit switch in case the RANCO fails ON. An IDEAL setup would be to split the heaters between TWO RANCOS.... Most of us do not need to go that far but should at least use 1 ommercial controller and (3) or more small heaters.

We invest hundreds or thousands in our tanks and want to cheap out with a $20 heater. You may want to take note that many tank crashes are caused by malfunctioning heaters. Do you want to lose your investment because you trusted a $20 hobby heater?

hex, a search of the forums and the internet will show that the finnex units fail also (even the ones with the external controllers). Hobby heaters are simply junk and that is why we need to split the heating up between several less damaging units and control them with a commercial grade device.

You can find hundreds of threads with people touting their favorite heater and their happiness with it. Finnex, Ebos, won bros, via aqua, hartz, etc etc. You will also find several "that brand cooked my tank" for every "I love mine" type of comment. You will be hard pressed to find anybody who has had a RANCO cook their tank. You will NOT find anybody that has used a RANCO (or other suitable unit) used several smaller heaters that has cooked their tank.

I understand and agree with your logic. but can you be a bit more detailed. on how and where to get this RANCO. i have found some online but i am not sure if it is what you are talking about.

Yes, the aquacontroller is also a good "temperature controller".

You guys may want to know that most of the titanium heaters all come from the same overseas manufacturer as well :)
