Which wrasse?

awesome at life
i am stocking my standard 55g and after my last fish purchase(Halichoeres chrysus), i am now smitten by wrasse's:eek1:. i have been looking at my lfs's in the area for some more of the "exotic" wrasses but havent had any luck. i saw quite a few good looking ones on liveaquaria and i am wondering which one to get. any help would be appreciated

Longfin Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus rubriventralis)

Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus carpenteri)

McCosker's Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus mccoskeri)

Filamented Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus filamentosus)

I would be cautious about putting too many wrasses in a 50 gallon, as indicated in Live Aquaria's compatability chart. I have a McCosker's Flasher Wrasse and he is a beautiful fish. Of course everyone's opinion will differ.

No more halichoeres for sure. I'd be more worried about one or the other wrasse jumping tank considering the size. I've two anampses meligreades and a pair of cirrhilabrus adornatus in my 225G but I'll not put in more after we had a jumping contest last summer. Had to put glass paneling on top to prevent those slippery missiles from escaping!

What other fish do you have?

I have a flame angel and a sebae clown in addition to the McCosker's. Had a purple pseudochromis until he jumped through the eggcrate (and landed on top) last week. You definitely want to consider some sort of cover to keep the rascals in. From what I have heard, glass is probably best although the salt creep means you have to clean it frequently. I definitely would not recommend eggcrate.

For a topper I would go to your local home hardware store and make yourself a screen with a frame. Not hard just get your aluminum frame and screen it. Glass holds in the heat and salt creep is a pain. The screen can be washed with the hose. The screen will filter the light a small amount but will alllow the aquarium to breathe. I'm a wrasse feak so I won't comment on which I would buy any choice will be a good one.

Right now i only have a green chromis, 2 baby perculas, and the yellow wrasse. I have eggcrate over the tank now but I'm going to DIY the screen top. I plan on only adding one more wrasse from the list above along with a yellow watchman goby, but I just can't make up my mind on which one yet.

i wouldnt add a carpenters just my opinion but i think the mccroski is very beautiful, and so is the line spot flasher. either are a good choice. however these fish are swimmers and love to roam. I am a wrasse addict as well. I have a trio of Johnsoni fairies, a pair of guilded fairys, a pair of adornus fairys, a pair of hooded faries a pair of pylei faries as well as a red tail flasher, yellow flasher, mccroski flasher, and royal flasher. oh and a naokoe fairy. If you have any more questions dont hesitate to ask!

the wife already said that she doesnt like the carpenter anyways so thats a no go. im leaning towards the mccoskers or the filamented right now. now i just gotta see if i can find either of these locally
