white di resin?

I have acquired a philadelphia scientific deionizer filter and wanted to cut it open and recharge the resin. Once opened i noticed there is white resin in there as well (looks like purigen). Does anyone know what this might be, i called the manufacturer and they were not sure what i was talking about. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
