White Patch on Clown...Not Crypt

They Got My Number
Posted this over on the Disease forum but I know it's a pretty slow part of the site so I figured I would give it a shot here too.

With my recent loss in my FOWLR due to Crypt I would rather be safe then sorry (again).

I noticed this little white patch on my Snowflake Ocellaris a little while back and I was hoping it was just Lymphocystis and would go away with food/good water.

The fish has food and good water, eats like a pig, and swims/breathes normally but the white is still there right behind it's first stripe and also a little bit on the end of it's left pectoral fin.

It's definitely raised and slightly fuzzy looking. Nothing else in the tank is affected (another Snowflake Ocellaris and a Helfrichi Firefish)

What do you think it is? What type of treatment would you recommend? I was thinking Prazi or should I just keep an eye on it?

You know what is odd i looked the other day and saw the same damn thing on mine. I FREAKED OUT. come to find out if it is anything it is Lymphocystis. you can read more at

http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/disease/lymphocystis.php

I saw it on my fish 3 days later it was gone. I think my fish just scraped the rock getting away from its partner in crime. From all the research i could find it was not a major problem. It was one dot that didnt spread or get bigger so now that it is gone i havnt given it a secon thought. Hope it helps a bit

I'm still hoping its Lymph, but it's been there for almost a week now and hasn't changed. I wish I could feed medicated food without worrying about it dissolving and killing my coral.

Fuzzy sounds like fungus. Lympho usually looks like cauliflower. As long as the fish is eating and looks ok otherwise, I would just keep an eye on it. If it gets bigger, you may want to take it out treat with an antibiotic.

Good deal, it hasn't changed in a week so I'm guessing it's not going to get bigger.

Has anyone treated with medicated food in a reef tank? When the food dissolves does it kill coral or does the active ingredient need to be ingested to be effective?

SkullV...Beautiful specimen you have there. Is the spot sticking out similar to a pimple?

I've never tried medicated food because of the risk with my corals. IME, feeding more frequently of smaller portions has taken care of anything that has looked "Funky" on my clowns. Use a variety of foods throughout the day. I usually use flake when I'm home on my lunch break, cyclopeeze when I'm home after work, pellet a couple hours later and garlic soaked mysis before lights out.

Hopefully someone will chime in and tell you exactly what is happening to your clown.

Yep, raised up like a pimple. The fish generally eat 3x a day. Twice NLS pellets and once Rods food. This clown still eats like a pig and is still very close with her mate.

None of the other fish have any symptoms.

You should be fine then. A little TLC and it should fall off soon I would think.

one thing i know is when treating some meds falt out kill coral. so treat in a Med tank and let it do its thing. better safe than sorry. I have never had to treat any saltwater fish medications. I hope i never have to but everything I have been told is to treat it in a different tank. I have a 14 Biocube set up just incase i ever have to treat anything. I have had it for 3 years and never had to use it but it sits there incase i ever have to. Good luck keep us informed.

I have a hospital tank but it wont be free for another 2 weeks. I have a coral beauty in copper right now.

Well the white bump is still there as long as the two spots on her fin. None of them have changed size or shape. She does not seem bothered at all but I think it is about time to treat. In the next week or 2 I am breaking down the tank and moving everything so I'll get her and her mate into the hospital tank.

What meds would you all recommend for this type of ailment?

Has anyone used Maracyn Plus? Seems like it is a liquid combo of Maracyn 1 and 2. Should treat this whether it is bacterial or fungal.

Any opinions?

Maracyn+ is an antibiotic, hence it is not antifungal. Looks like your fish has Lymph, which is viral in nature. I would not treat with anything at this point.

I'm tagging along here... kind of a similar scenario.

Our female clown (true perc) gets a strange white patch on her from time to time. Some times up near her dorsal, or on her left side. I almost wonder if she rubs against something too hard (they have a huge nem/rbta). It goes away, then will reappear.

She's big and fat and eats like a pig. I soak the meaty foods in selcon, vitachem, and garlic guard. She eats formula one & two pellets also.

Tank parameters are great - no detectable nitrates, and PO4 around .08 on a hanna meter (not the pocket one).

The male has never shown a sign of anything - I hesitate taking her out to treat for something that I can't figure out.

Sounds like I should leave it alone then for the next couple weeks while their new tank is prepared. If it's still around when I am moving everything to the new tank I'll drop them in the QT and treat.

I am happy to say that literally one day after I posted the update all of the white on her fins is gone!! Now just waiting for the little patch on her head to disappear. I have to believe that the NLS Ther-A+ is helping!
