White Slime Desperate

The dreaded white slime has come and gone in my two year old tank. This time, it has been here for 10 days and it looks like some of the SPS corals are starting to die. All regular water parameters are normal. Skimmer is working overtime, UV is running 24 hours a day. The slime is getting super thick and i can't suck it out of the tank fast enough. Need help ASAP please.

Can you post a picture of the tank? When you say white slime I'm not really sure what to envision.

It is very hard to see. The glass was cleaned two days ago and is getting covered with white strands of slime.

I don't think I've encountered a thread with this issue. But my guess would be that it's bacterial in nature. Are you dosing a carbon source like vodka or vinegar, or using bio pellets? If so I'd back off a little bit & see what happens.

Otherwise I don't have an idea for you beyond the old standbys of siphoning, decent sized water changes and maybe running some GAC. More info would be helpful too.

Are you running carbon and GFO?, and not just a bag full of carbon in a random spot, an actual carbon reactor.
when is the last time you changed your UV bulb?

Do you have any macro algae in the tank? When Caulerpa would go sexual I would get this white slime all over things.

That too. I had chaeto dying (I think) and it was releasing this white slime/mucus that looked like saliva all over my tank. I took it out, ran carbon and GFO and it was gone in a day. I dont even have a UV filter yet.

I have had issues with this, its coming from your RODI, check your resevoir I bet it has it too. change out all your RODI catridges, make sure your resevoir is not getting any light

Welcome to hell #swbrewers.

I have tried all the mentioned ideas for getting rid of this stuff over the past 5-7 months

Switched to bottled distilled water 3 months ago
- have used large quantities of carbon
- lots of water changes
- removed and scrubbed all rock
- sucked it from sump with turkey baster
- use GFO
- NO3 undetectable
- PO4 0.1-0.25
- tried stopping water changes for a few weeks
- removed room air fresheners
- don't carbon dose
- no new fish
- removed 90% of substrate
- removed 70% of rock. (feeding etc)
- organic introduction is at a minumum

Still the glass is milky/ slimy and mucus starts getting stringy on rocks after a week. Some coral dead, some stressed, some seems fine.

Anxiously awaiting the day when an absolute solution is realized.

+1.

You may want to consider blowing the stuff off your rocks, walls, corals with a powerhead after adding filter sock to sump and a power filter to DT (commensurate with size of tank), and changing sock and filter media daily until you get this under control.

Good luck,

Mike
