My regal angel has come down with these spots on him that I have not seen before. Anyone know what they are and how to treat? He is currently in QT with Macryn 2. He has been trough 2 treatments of Prazipro and a few weeks of copper with cuprimine. STill eating and active.

Could it be Chilodonella or Oodinium, single-celled parasite attacking around a wound or ulcer. They do appear next to the red areas on the fish. Recommended treatment is copper and the fish just came out of a copper treatment. Would these still appear after having been treated with copper? Should I do second copper treatment?

I believe Chilodonella is limited to freshwater. It doesn't look like Oodiniium to me either. That being said, I'm not sure what it looks like. At first I thought lymphocystis, but looking at it more I don't feel sure on that. Sorry, I know that's not super helpful. :(

I suppose since the fish has recently been through most common treatments, you might try a short duration formalin dip.

I had somebody PM me with pictures of the same weird spheres on another fish. I don't know what they are, but they are too large to be Oodinium. That person never got back with me about the outcome of their case, so I still don't know how serious this is.

If you had a microscope, the standard thing to do would be scrape some off and look at them under 80x.

I've started treating with cupermine again, but I'm not sure its the right thing to do. What damages can happen if a fish has too long exposure to copper?

At therapeutic levels a few extra weeks shouldn't cause much trouble. The most likely would be a loss of intestinal bacterial, but that will recover with some time. Copper is toxic to fish, but Cupramine is particularly well tolerated and therapeutic doses shouldn't cause any permanent harm in the short term.

I've used cupramine with out fish loss in Angels however it can rapidly cause lateral line and head erosion. Google copper and lateral line problems. Are these white areas patchy almost like you could pull them off? Sometimes these fish get Lymphcistis when they are stressed out. It will recover on its own as long as it is eating and water quality is at its best. Stress can be other fish in the qt as well maybe make sure they are separated well. Do the fish have some live rock pieces to pick at? A good all around treatment for a qt tank is Paraguard it actually works on a number of different fish problems.

JRR,

Actually, the copper/HLLE connection is almost certainly a connection between HLLE and the subsequent use of carbon to remove copper after a treatment. Copper alone has not been demonstrated to cause HLLE - but copper (and other heavy metals) combined with carbon are being investigated as a cause. I personally feel the issues has to do with carbon dust (fines) but there is another idea that has to do with the action of carbon itself and toxicity of heavy metals, there will be a paper forthcoming that discusses that.
