White stringy stuff coming off of sps coral?

Ummm... Really tiny white strings? In one location only? Like 1/4" white strings? When I had AEFW I could tell when the acro was being bit. It would release tiny white strings as reaction to the AEFW bite. This happened on many different acros. I would baste the coral at the spot where the strings would show and bam! AEFW would fly off into the water colum and be eatin by my wrasse. Hope your strings arent the same strings I had.

They are filaments the corals release either as a defense response (you reaching in your tank a lot) or when feeding.

Mesenterial filaments, the guts, often times are a response to stress, coral warfare being one of the common initiators.

I have seen this in many of my acros, usually it is around feeding time-I had this same question so glad to see the post. I figured it was them trying to eat or something. I do notice it now more lately than in the past.

i run carbon so hopefully warfare is out of the question but i do believe it is stressed i do have a habit of always putting my hands in the tank. Everything else looks fine but it seems that its had the filaments out for almost a week now.

Many/most hand soaps contain antibacterial... Probably worse for tanks then dirty hands. The natural oil from our skin isn't good either (in smaller tanks just reaching in is enough to make skimmers not skim well for a few hrs)...

I stressed my birdsnest when I first put it in my tank, lots of exposure to air, and it got real stringy. I just turkey basted the ish out of them and it was good to go. Looked very spry afterwards as well.
