White tips? Help Please

Hi

I am new to keeping SPS corals. I am seeing white tips on this SPS and I am not sure how bad this if at all.

If anyone can please take a look at this photos and let me know what you think. I will be very thankful.

I have had it about 4 weeks and it looks like it is growing some I am just not sure.

Great news . I just don't know about my lights. I have LED radon set at 60% I have no idea if thats correct.

I started running my raidons at 60% in natural mode and bumped them up a little each week over a month untill I hit 70% and then switched to artificial mode running at 75%. My tank is mostly sps small frags with lps. hope this helps

That's Exactly what I'm doing I just pushed it up to 65% today and was at 60 for 2 months. I guess I will let it run for 30 days then go 5 % more. I also placed the Corals at the bottom of the tank and the will move them up After a few months as they get used to the light.

Yeah new growth. 60% is a good place to start. You can slowly ramp it up over the next month or so.

Looks like new growth to me! Nice!!!! Most sps get white tips when growth is starting. I remember when I first got into sps about 8 years ago I was trippin when i saw the white tips! Enjoy!!!

Thanks, I am so happy.. How will I know when to move it or turn up the leds? I only have a few small pieces. I really want to learn SPS I would like a tank full of them..

If they're growing and coloring up at your current lighting intensity and schedule then why would there be a need to ramp it up?

I guess your right. I just thought SPS corals need a lot of light and at 65% I was thinking that was low and I need to work my way up higher. Can you tell me what to look for if more light is needed ?

I would think brown or dull SPS while still having low nutrients would be a good indication that there is not enough light in either duration or intensity. If that becomes the case, I'd shoot for more in duration than intensity before I ramped them up. Being that they're coloring up nicely and growing, I wouldn't think this is in your future. Looks great so far.

Many will argue with me, but I'm no longer in the 0 NO3 and 0 PO4 camp. I have much better colors with some nitrate and phosphate in the water...especially when running bright, powerful lighting. Whatever you're measuring in NO3 and PO4 right now seems perfect. Why mess with what's working? Leave it be, keep the parameters stable, and watch those frags grow into beautiful colonies.:beer:

So how about the PH? I am running at 8.3 to 8.4. What do you think?

Ph is fine. A little on the high side, but fine nonetheless as long as it's stable.
