Whitish Patches on Fins and Eyes

Grizzled & Cynical
The tangs in my FOWLR are all showing some whitish patches on their fins and eyes. This has persisted for some time, so it's not brook, uronema or velvet; at least, I don't think so. I'm thinking some kind of fungal or bacterial issue. Would appreciate any thoughts; and what kind of treatments?

Steve, they've had it off and on for a few weeks. No 'behavioral' changes, all eating well, just these patches. I think actually it may be ich, or secondary infections from the ich, now that I look more closely, so I may just dose the tank with CP ands see if that helps. I first saw it after getting a fish from a buddy of mine and not doing QT (I know :() since it's 'just' my FOWLR (no fish gets into my reef tank without QT). I'm unable to get a good enough picture of them to show here, and for it to be useful.

Ich is going to look like a sprinkling of salt on the fish. Your problem sounds different. Any flashing? Fast respiration?

No fast respiration, but the convict tang does flash periodically. Nine of the others do however.

Understood, and agree. I shall attempt to take one that shows what I'm seeing. It's very strange. I'm seeing some spots this morning, so whatever the problem is it does appear to include ich. Glad it's my FOWLR rather than the reef tank - much easier to address. BTW, in my last post 'nine' should have been 'none'.

Thanks guys.

What's very interesting, and I don't defend the sensibleness of this, necessarily ...... this FOWLR is a separate system from my reef tank, but when I do water changes in my reef tanks, I flow the 'old' water through this FOWLR (no possibility of back-contamination though). I know my reef tank has ich, and has had for close to 2 years, even though fish are essentially asymptomatic. Yet, fish in the FOWLR clearly show ich symptoms. Friend of mine was always convinced that reef tanks are able to 'supress' ich in a way a non reef tank could not. Not proposing anything, necessarily, just a curious observation.

Best picture I could manage .....

Body is completely clear, but fins are 'hazy' and ook a bit ragged. One eye is cloudy, the other not. I initially though flukes perhaps, but a FW dip made no difference. Fish looks better now than it did a few days ago. Only change was my running a UV. What would you chaps suggest? I'm thinking bacterial. Let them fight it off or intervene? Naso is the worst affected. Convict is clear. Appetites are good.

In the CP Primer they list possibly some wrasse could have issues.. so you might have a problem with it. You could always use it as a test subject, or pull it if you plan on dosing cp.

Tough to tell for sure. It does look more like ich than a bacterial infection to me.

I had something very similar. Took me forever to figure it out. Ended up being flukes. Dosed Prazipro and it cleared it right up. Never had a problem since. Safe for reef tanks also.

Yeah, I'm reluctant to do CP on the tank because of the four leopard wrasses, which show no symptoms at all. The Naso appears to be improving slowly, and is even putting on some weight (it was quite thin when I first got it) by eating nori like a horse. I think for now I shall continue to feed them well, run the UV and see what a week brings. I had hoped to move the Chevron to my reef tank, but that's on hold for obvious reasons :)

I agree it probably is ich because I know my tanks have it, I just get 'weird' symptoms - not the typical salt sprinkles. Fish in my reef are largely asymptomatic, though new Tangs invariably break out for a few days. This FOWLR seems less resistant however.

Unfortunately my two QT tanks are occupied; though only for a couple more weeks. Maybe I will pull the Naso if it fails to continue to improve.

Closing the loop on this .....

Naso is now asymptomatic and looks perfectly healthy and is eating well (even if it remains a bit thin). I ended up doing nothing and let whatever it was run its course. I know this tank has ich, so whether that's what it was or some kind of secondary infection I cannot say.
