Who carries PVC gate valves?

I have redo plumbing before getting tank going again, need a pvc gate valve 1" or 1 1/4". All i see anyone carry is the brass ones, and well we all know what happens then...

lol, I just went through the same thing, and for the meantime had to plumb in a normal pvc ball valve. Aquatic Eco has them btw, but they are a bit pricey.

The gate valve allows finer control (every Aqua C EV-skimmer has one hanging off the end). Ball valves tend to get tough to use overtime with aquarium use. That said, I spent $29 (before shipping) for a rebuidable 1" Spears gate valve for my skimmer and it was the biggest POS ever. I snapped the outlet tube clean off my skimmer it was so hard to turn. :mad2:

Ussually ace hardware has them. I bought a 1" there for 8 bucks a couple weeks ago, ofcourse it was local to me. They all ussualy carry them though.

ahh nightmares seeing that brass gate valve *shutters*. so no where local beside aquatic eco? that is a bit far from me

Try your Ace Hardware first. If they dont have it, make the trip to Aquatic Eco

I can't veiw the link, it keeps locking up on me, but they look just like the brass gate valve shown above but are ussually either gray pvc or white pvc... The one I bought has a red handle. It is much easier to use than the ball valves I have on my system.

yes that is the one, i think ace hardwares close early, dont get off work til 7. hmm.. guess not doing my plumbing tonight

Yea I think all Ace Hardares closes at 7. Have you tried Home Depot and Lowes, they might have it.

why do you need a gate valve? if on a skimmer okay but no need to put a gate valve on returns or drains. if you get the ball valves from lowes they work great and cost 1/4 of the price. they are easy to move and they last. i have had issues with the ones from ace and hd. i even use ball valves on my skimmers and they work just fine. remember that the gate valves are designed for more precise adjustments ball valves are not. but if you just adjust they work good. good luck

I picked one up for my RO/DI bin at Home Depot. It looks just like an outdoor water spigot.

i use ball valves on my drains to adjust also and love them.

i need a gate valve on my overflow drain because i'm using a gravity forces drain to increase the amount the overflow can take, it allows the drain to take on a ton more water, but i need the precisness of a gate valve to get the levels right.

got pics? pipe can only flow so much water by law. 1" pipe can only flow so much water gravity or not.

I get my gate valves from ACE Hardware. Ask them to replace the screw that holds the handle on with a stainless screw. They will usually do it without a hassle.

Be sure to use PVC, and not brass like is pictured above. That picture really should be taken down so that nobody makes the mistake of not reading the thread and getting one of those brass valves that will destroy thier system.

that has already happened to her. that's why she's asking where to get a gate valve from. seems like a couple of people have been this lately

jade post some pics and so i can see what you are talking about. i have never had to put a valve on the drain side unless tapping it into a refugium or other area. overflows internal or external will flow the same amount you give to the. valve the output of the pump to regulate the drain flow. i've heard of people putting valves on the drain and it ended up cause backflow issues.

edit: overflows will flow what you give them unless you try to over power them.

I agree putting a valve on the drain side is a bad idea. You should never restrict the drain, only restrict the water returning to the tank. It never hurts to have extra drain capacity.
