Who has a Pinpoint pH monitor?

Who in the Franklin/Antioch/Hermitage area has a Pinpoint pH monitor?

I bought one (possibly foolishly) and it will not calibrate. I assume the probe needs to be replaced, but I want to confirm that before I contact the individual from which I purchased the monitor.

If anyone who has one of these monitors lives in any of the above areas and wouldn't mind me coming by and testing my monitor with your probe, it would be very much appreciated.

I can let you borrow mine. It is a spare right now (plan on needing it once I get to Montgomery, though). My days are packed with busy lately, but I come through that area every day (the Antioch area, anyway). I've never used it, so I am assuming it works (bought it used a while back)
 
Well...that's a start. I was hoping to find someone who had one up and running so I could just plug their pH probe into the monitor I have and see if I get the same reading. I suppose I could do that with yours though. What time do you usually come through the area?
 
Usually just before 8:00 and then between 4:30 and 5:30... I'll see if I can find some calibration fluid to get it calibrated (I think I packed it all up already, though). It might be spinning wheels, but maybe it'll help. What is yours doing? Are you trying to calibrate for two different solutions and getting different readings after adjusting for the second? I can put it in my tank and see how it compares to the Milwaukee controller I have in the 125, too.
 
I am using both the 7 and 10 calibration fluids. They are Pinpoint brand, purchased from the AC tonight. When I turned the thing on, it registered around 4.5...I turned it up to 7.0. I rinsed, then put the probe in the 10 fluid and turned the other dial (4,10) up toward 10...it wouldn't rise above 8.5 or so....

I tried turning both dials all the way down and starting over. The highest I could get it to go was right at 7.03, in both solutions.

The battery is new, and like I said, the solutions were purchased tonight.

You have to go back and forth between the two solutions several times, getting closer each time to the correct value. Perhaps you did that, but it wasn't obvious from your post. Also, if you plug your probe into someone else's controller, you will not get the same reading necessarily. The other thing you might check is to see that the glass bulb and the small metal (platinum?) electrode near the base of the bulb is clean. I use an old toothbrush and vinegar to clean mine, but even that can be a bit harsh if you're not careful.

Maybe I didn't do this right...there's a clear vinyl sleeve over the end of the probe. Am I supposed to take that off?

I tried getting it closer to 7 and 10 each time, but the 4,10 adjustment knob would only reach around 8.5 and then it would stop.

Same for the 7 adjustment knob. It would stop around 5.xx and not go any higher, when it SHOULD have gone up to 7....right?
 
The vinyl sleeve comes off. That is just for storing the probe so it doesn't get damaged. Good points Dave. I didn't realize you had to keep calibrating until it gets closer on both ends... Good to know.
 
Uhhh....I don't remember seeing that part in the instructions about removing the sleeve. I'll do that tonight and try it again...gotta go buy more pH solution though.

I DID however, read the part where you have to go back and forth between the solutions, dialing it in until the meter reads 7.0 and 10.0 each time you place it into the solutions.

Well, I feel like a big ole dumb***...
 
Hey man... dont worry ive done the same. make sure you keep that sleeve. Its purpose is for storage of the probe. You have to add water to it then insert the probe. This way it will always remain wet, until you need it again.
 
Hey ryan I just saw this post! I haven't heard anything from you today about the monitor so I hope that is a good sign. To everyone giving ryan advise I thank you as I am the one who sold him the unit. I pm'd him the directions to calibrate it but never even thought to say remove the cap. I remember when I first bought a monitor I too did not know to remove the cap. Thanks again and good luck.

Hey, don't feel bad. You didn't know. I assume the probe is behaving properly now, and it should calibrate fine. Good seller to send it to you with the cover and storage solution.

I try to calibrate to +/- 0.01 pH, which takes a few iterations. Be sure and rinse the probe in RO/DI before placing it in the new solution, or you'll contaminate the buffer.
 
Can you reuse the pouches for the calibrations back and forth, or are you supposed to go with new pouches for each iteration?
 
You can reuse, but they start to deteriorate as soon as you open the pouch. I've reused them upto a month or two after opening with good results.

Hey Chris,

I didn't have time last night to try it again, although I did go and purchase two more packages of solution. I'll try it again tonight when I get home. I'm sure it will be fine now that I know what I'm doing. :thumbsup:
 
don't feel bad, i was in such a hurry to get my ph and orc wires ran so they wouldn't show that i dropped them in with the tip covers on. Big surprise when my ph was low I had a panic and test tubed it. then discovered i left the covers on. duh.
