Who here reuses their activated carbon?

I want to start using carbon semi-regularly... and was wondering how many re-use their activated carbon? I was told that simply rinsing it in freshwater would do the trick. Any advice?

I rinse and reuse mine once, so I get about two months out of about 1-2 cups of the stuff.

When I rinse mine, I break it up, so I get some fresh stuff from th inside.

I am sure it is not as effective as new, but then again, some people dont use it at all. go figure.

I also buy in bulk, and fill those filter bags.

I plan to do something a bit different in the future.

But first things first.

gotta finish the sump installation and x-over.

Mine goes in the trash. I've got the carbon from the group buy, so it's uber-uber cheap. 2 cups/month in my phosban reactor mixed with the GFO.

The only way to restore carbon is to heat it in an oven at 180f for about 30 minutes. it will release all the organics and can be reused.. but be warned your wife wont like the smell.:). rinsing in freshwater does nothing but make it appear cleaner i guess. unless you use alot of it its easier to replace it...good luck..bpatrol

Carbon cannot be reused once you use it you cannot get rid of any organics it absorbs even heating it in the oven does not recharge it it is not rechargable. If you are planning on using it use it full time do not use it for a month and take a month from not using it. When you are finished using it toss it out in the garden or on your grass it breaks down and helps add nutrients back into your soil.
