Who is using the Sunsun filter??

Hey all, so I have been using the fluval 404 for a little over a year now but the propeller broke so I figured now is the time to get a different filter. I just ordered the Sunsun 303A filter with the 4 stage filtration baskets for my 29 gallons. I just now have to wait for it to arrive.

I was wondering, whoever has this, what media are you using in the baskets? The original media pads that they are selling for it seems way overpriced (3 pads for about 15 bucks).

So, I figured one basket gets the bio media/balls that I had in my fluval to sort of help with the filter transition.

What else should I use? What cheap alternative media are out there? Thanks for any help!

Although this methodology is still experimental (IMO), biopellets might work for you. You could call yourself one of the pioneers in this newest craze.

Most people in saltwater don't use filters, although the smaller tanks are often an exception because of the lack of a sump. They're a lot of work, and live rock and a deep sandbed is the usual marine answer---those never have to be changed or maintained, really. But it definitely depends on what you're keeping in the tank.

As for media, my own preference if I'm running a qt or hospital tank is honestly plain carbon hand-wrapped in a knot of either filter floss or (I kid thee not) polyester fiberfill pillow stuffing, which I have because it's cheaper than filter floss (for my koi pond when it needs extra)... I really don't like bioballs at all, because they're usually just where nitrate gets produced...live rock would process that all the way down to nitrogen gas.---
But if I'm running a plain filter, I just plan on changing it out and tossing the carbon nearly daily, or absolutely daily, depending on fish load.

Hmmm biopellets ... never heard of that. Did a quick google and it does seem tempting hehe. Not sure if I'll want to risk it if there isn't much reviews on it though.

Thanks. The fluval has been working fine for me and I especially like the quietness I get from a canister. Ideally, I would probably have just got a skimmer but the noise. So, pillow stuffing eh? You got a particular department store for getting this cheaper pillow stuffing? lol :p
