who keeps clams under PC's

I dont know anyone who keeps them under pc's I have seen them in stores in nano cubes with only pc's how they do over the long term??? I do however know someone who has kept several croceas under vho for many years with great results, and as I understand deresas are a lower light clam who could probably be kept under pc's

I have personally seen my LFS kill two clams in a 12g JBJ display, the first was a squsmosa, the last one was a maxima.I told them every time those clams needed more light, both times they said that they would be ok.Hopefully they have learned a lesson. The cube had stock 48w pc lighting.

PC lighting just is not intense enough for clams most clams require MH lighting. Keeping a clam under less intense lighting is one thing but keeping a clam under MH lighting means a healthy happy clam is more important.

My 75 gallons tank, 220W PC + 150W ODNO

2 squamasa- ~1.5 years, botton of tank (~24 inches from lights)

1 gold tear drop Max ~1.5 years (~15 inches from lights)

3 croceas ~11 months (~10 inches from lights)(pic of one of my croceas in mu gallery)

All are growing (new scutes every months) and non have lost any of their orginal color!

IMO, water quality first then maybe light as second(or third)

Keeping two T. maximas, 4 x 65w PC lamps (two 10,000K two Actinic) approximately 14" below the lights are doing great.

I have had a crocea (3-4in) for about 3yrs now. The clam is 2/3 the way up on live rock. In a std. 20 gal with 2 65 watt PC's

I have a teal (more grren than blue) squamosa and a green striped with blue rim derasa clams both for about 6 months, in a 29 gallon reef with 2 65 watt pc,. both on the bottom.

I agree with gophia, water quality first, then lighting 2nd, had a deresa (on bottom), crocea, and blue maxima (2/3 up) under 260w pc's for about a year until I upgraded to MH's. Got the maxima as a baby (1") and it grew to almost 3" during that time. Their vibrant colors (especially blues) acts more like a shield to intense light, and they would adapt to lesser intense light by losing some color. This happened to the crocea, during that year, it lost some color, however, it stayed healthy and still grew (3" when I got it, now it's about 4") The Baby maxima however, stayed the same vibrant color for some reason, and I got good growth out of it too. I just assumed that it didn't know any better since it haven't had enough time to experienced intense lighting. After I switched to MH, the crocea became vibrant again, and the maxima stayed the same, growth however didn't change, and I switched out lights about 7-8 month's ago. So I believe wate quality is the key with special attention to Ca and dKH.

I have two maxima clams, and they are very fine under my 192w PC lighting for atleast over a year now. They are all located at 2/3 tank high level.....good luck, integra

i have 2 maximas, one 4 inches, one 2 1/2 inches under a 36in pc hood in a 65 g. so far so good. they both show growth in the shell and are fully open every day.

I have 3 croceas under PC lighting.
I have 4.965 watts per gallon and they're doing fine.
I also can keep SPS in my tank with the water flow that I have.
I did a lot of research before I bought my first clam and from what I read is that you don't need as much light as what people say. JUST WHAY I READ.

I am not suggesting that it can't be done either. It just so happens that MOST of the time it is somebody that is newer to the hobby, and also a newer tank. Leaving you with a much smaller margin for error and not much experience to help them through the issues.

I've been keeping a crocea under 80w or pc in my 10g for a few months. It looked good and grew alittle. I recently moved it to my 125. It's about 8-9" from the VHOs and looks great now.
