Who use 250 W Hamilton 14K DE

I have matured SPS tank (4 years old) under 400W 20K XM plus actinic.
The growth and color of sps and other corals are perfect and I am so pleased with it.

Recently I set up new tank under 250 W 14K Hamilton DE plus actinic. I transfered some sps frags from old tank (400W 20K) to new one (250W 14K Hamilton DE) but color of sps become changed. So I am so worried about color change and can not transfer my precious frag like superman, rainbow, and poker star etc..

I have considered about change from 14K to 20K. But many people recommand 14K should be better than 20K.

Please let me know about color change and growth rate under 14K hamilton de lamp and show me your tank looks like.

And anybody using 20K 250 DE lamp.. please show me and let me know growth and color of sps.

I have one over my 40g coral prop/growout tank

I can say color is good I use no actinics. Growth is pretty darn good also . Now I don't know if nutrients has anything to do with it but . I have 3 tort frags which started very small like chips of tips and now all 3 are over an inch tall in only 4 months .


I have plenty of other torts in my nutrient poor sps tank with 250 phx ofver the tank and my torts don't grow as fast IMO as they do in the 40g under hammies.

I've used them on a 11" deep frag tank with no problem, and I actually like them better than the Phoenix 14k that I'm using now. I had them on my reef tank, but some of the corals that were on the bottom were losing color.

I have both of those, but I don't do pics. They look fine under hammy 14Ks.

BTW - as you would expect, the DE 14K Hammy is completely differenet on HQI vs. Electronic MH ballast.

I use my DE bulbs for approx 12 months on my SPS tank in HQI fixture and then an additional approx 12 months on my FOWLR on CoralVue&IceCap Electronic Ballasts. The color is different on each type of ballast along with the watt pull. My HQI pull about 360-370W and the electronic pull about 251-253. For me, every HQI bulb that I have used is bluer on electronic than on HQI. They are also less intense to my eye (which means nothing).

used a quantum meter under a 250wDE Ham14k on Ham magHqi ballasts... light was 12" off the water... at the water surface ~250umol2/sec.... at 10" ~350umol2/sec... bulb was just around a month old or less (dont know the reflector brand)

on my frag tank... an 8 month old 250wp14k on PFOhqi at 10" read ~500umol2/sec at the water surface for comparison. (ROIII reflector)

nothing subjective... just some "loose data" for your enjoyment

So.. People said Hami 14K should be OK.. But I have HQI ballast and always think need more blue.. Maybe I have to change 20K or another 14K more blue one.
