A friend has one in an awsome reef tank. He messed up and kept putting feeder shrimp in the tank for it. THEN he tried to get a cleaner shrimp. Didnt work to well.

I plan to get one if/when my pepermint shrimp dies.
Very cool fish IMHO.

I had one that ate all of my shrimp. it would also hide everytime I came up to the glass, so it wasn't even really worth having IMO. On the other side, I have friends that have done really well with them.

I got a pair of DD awhile back, and they are fantastic. Just loads of personality (always seem to be popping up in new places and surveying with the googly eyes), completely peaceful with the fish and inverts, and attractive coloration. Both of mine have this funny habit of swimming straight up the corners of the tank like an F-15 and sitting at the water surface pointing towards the ceiling. One of them also loves sitting on the nori clip at the top of the tank.

The only issue I had with them being homicidal was against a cleaner shrimp who was already pretty injured after an incident with my Vortech. Apparently he smelled pretty tasty. But pretty much every other fish/shrimp in the tank felt the same way, cuz nobody left it alone until it died shortly thereafter.

I'd highly recommend a flame hawk anyday. They even got the coveted "favorite fish" title from my dad, which is saying a lot because he doesn't give a flip about my tank.

Very good description. My pair is from DD too; tons of personality, love shrimp and similar inverts.

i thought as much, pretty good feedback for sure, i love the way they swim and sort of hover, not definately going to get 1, i like to look at the whole picture, but its certainely a fish im seriously interested in, thanks for the comments, please continue with any other views.

Great fish, unless you like shrimp. Kicked mine out cause I need the peps to control stupid aiptasia

Also, You'll Never Walk Alone - Flame Hawks are, after all, red :)

How does the pair interact?

I just started my tank and one of these is third on my list--I love how they look too lazy to swim when they perch. Other thank cleaner shrimp, are there any other invertebrates anybody's had picked at by these guys?
I like the cleaner shrimp, but I'm willing to by-pass them for this guy...

How does the pair interact?

They definitely aren't a "pair" per se, but they don't mind each other at all either. If their paths cross, they are completely fine with each other. Otherwise they don't stick together or sleep together.

I'm just glad DD sent me two flame hawks that are cool with each other. Double the fun with no drama!

I have my Flame Hawkfish for more than a year now. He is one of my favorite fishes - he would sit there and watch for me. When he sees that he has my attention, he would move his fins like a puppy wagging his tail. That's when I get the Spectrim pellets and feed him. He is really intelligent and interacts well. I've had him in a 28 gallon nano reef with no problems to corals, hermits, other fish. I experimented with two peppermint shrimps a month ago for my aiptasia and the shrimps are still alive and well.
Really nice fish to have.

I have had a Flame (purchased small)for 2 years in a 24g which was just moved to a 40g with a Coral banded shrimp without any problems. Has ben a model citizen with my snails/hermits the entire time. I did notice him eat a mini star at one point but it can be hit or miss with these guys.
What I did and highly suggest is find a small Flame (not full grown) and add your inverts and you will have a much better chance of a happy tank.

This feedback is pleasing, thankyou very much everyone, what a great community rc is, its what i wanted to hear, and as of yet no bad reviews :)

well yet|||

I have had my Flame Hawkfish for 5 months. He is one of my favourite fish in my 180 gallon aquarium. He is always on the move, hopping all around the tank. He's way more active then any Longnose Hawkfish I have ever owned in the past. I have read about their vibrant red colour fading. But I have been able to maintain the colour of mine by feeding a varied diet and NLS pellets. They are very tough and social. He will out compete my healthy 6 inch Cuban Hogfish for NLS pellets many times. Whenever I am doing any work in my sump, he'll come right up to the front of the glass and watch me. An all around awesome fish.

I have a DD pair as well and have the same experience. They are great fish.
