Who's the breeder in England?

Just took a quick look at liveaquaria.com and they advertize tank bred fish from England, for heaven's sake. Don't they know Edgar lives in Michigan?

They charge upwards of $44 for orchid dottybacks! Where did Martin go? Perhaps I need to learn these next.

Cheapest I've ever seen CB Dottybacks was 15.99 at a Petco. Next Cheapest, something like 29 at Etrop. Most LFS's are still asking $50-70 each up here.

My first guess is TMC ( The Marine Center) for the UK source.

Here is a real brain twister, wild caught orchid dottybacks ( or arabians or springeri) are WAY more expensive than CB. Go figure  I looked at a tiny Red Sea fridmani at lfs today, $69.95 :eek1: ORA sells them for roughly $14-$16.

Too much change in hobbist and lfs/wholesaler minds to do David... Sometimes I think only prohibition of collection of some species from the wild will do a difference.

Anyway, the objective to pursue for now is low cost so price cannot be an excuse and, maybe, become a main point.

Anderson.

Sice we are sort of on this subject how about putting together a list of the commercial breeders out there? I'd sort of like to know what we as home breeders are up against :D These are all I know of:

1) Oceans, Reefs and Aquariums (ORA) Florida
2) The Marine Center (TMC) England
3) C-Quest Puerto Rico
4) Ocean Rider ( seahorses only) Hawaii
5) South Australian Seahorse Marine Services (sh's only)
6) Sri Lanka/ Viet Nam ( I believe seahorses only at this time)

There must be more, especially in Germany or Japan, right? I suppose I am only really concerned with those that market in the US but still it would be nice to have a global picture of the status of captive breeding.

David, you can add ProAquatix to the list, although they just moved operations and apparently won't be selling much for a year. They came across my radar when CB Goldentail Blennnies started showing up at the LFS.

Matt

Well Kathy since you brought it up:D

The fish advertised from England are from TMC,

I contacted LA.com I spoke several times to Kevin Kohen the manager, he has no interest in my fish, when I first contacted him he only had cinamon clowns in stock, I offered my cinamons cheaper and percs, no response. A few months later I contacted him since he never had orchids in stock did not want them either.

Now I have orchids, neons, green banded gobies, cinamons, percs, clown gobies, and he rather not have them in stock than buy them from me who is about two hours away from the facility.

That shows how much they really care about the enviroment.

David you forgot the two second best after C-quest
Reef Propagations and Addyzone Hatcheries:D

There is a huge hatchery in thailand and another in Fiji setting up I beleive.

Most of those "I care about the enviroment" stores are about the money, whloesalers don't care either if they get it wild caugth cheaper they will. there is only two out of hundreds that care.

Ed

I think you've read Kevin totaly wrong. IMO Kevin does care, but is hinderred by corperate rules ;) Take some time to talk to the guy, rather then blasting him for something he may have zero controll over. Who's knows, they may have a deal worked with ORA ;)

Don't forget Hong Kong and Singapore, both have MO operations going on.

If he has deal with someone he should let me know and i would not call him several times offering my product he tells me to send him a list after I describe everything over the phone and he never contacts me again. Call him again , same story...I beleive they have a very open buying policy since they offer TR stock from England, Hawwai,US and Australia.

But enough of it I don't have any imterest in business with them.

Ed

Um, I think your printed point was:

.I beleive they have a very open buying policy since they offer TR stock from England, Hawwai,US and Australia.

Which is completly opposite of what I just wrote, and you said:
exactly my point...

But like you said, nuff about this......
