Why are my corals dying?

I'm sure everyone has their own problems in their tanks so I need advice.

In our 90 Gallon tank we have quite a few corals and lots have died recently. The other ones aren't thriving either.

We have a 90 gallon with sump/refugium.

Nitrite levels are perfect.

Nitrates are not the greatest. It's about the second yellow-orange one on the test card.

Ph is about 8.0

Ammonia is about the 2nd one on the card.

What temp should we keep it at? What is TOO hot? It can get up to 83 degrees until the chiller turns on. It sometimes gets down to 76, but usually stays at 79. We just barley got a big heater, but now we need the dual temp controller so it will stay exactly where we want it.

Phosphate's were about 1 two days ago we used some phosphate remover stuff and now it says 0. So I'm sure that will help a ton.

sounds like you need to get your temp under control. try to keep it within +or- 1 degree. a 7 degree differance is not healthy. also it sounds like you have ammonia. I would do a water change ASAP ! what are your ALK and Cal peramiters ?
 
Reset the Chiller to kick on at 75. If you have a Chiller, the temp. should not be 83. That is when I get dye offs too. 75-79 is good. JD
 
how old is your tank? sounds like you dont do enough water changes or you dont have enough LR and have to many fish...
 
We don't have a WHOLE lot of fish. And a pretty good cleanup crew.

We heard that corals live better when warmer. So what is too warm? 80?

We have about 80lbs rock.
 
anywhere in the 75-82 range is fine. I really think people worry too much about temperature fluctuations. My tank fluctuates from about 75 to 82, and I have no problems, plenty of SPS, etc. Wild reefs can fluctuate 8-10 degrees in a day.


THe ammonia reading is the culprit here, IMO.

Do you know what your Ca, and Alk are? You shoudlnt be keepign corals without kits.
 
I would also say ammonia. It should be 0 and inverts especially but also fish can't tolerate ammonia.

How long has the tank been set up? and what are the reading for the ammonia and nitrate? It should say what those colors mean.

83 is'nt the worst but I'd bring it down a little also.

We've had our tank 1 yr 1/2.

Yeah we have those kits.

Ca- Ours is high 520 last time we checked. But it might have gone down. I will check it later tonight.
Alk- 3.20 - alk should be 2.9 right?
kH 9.0 - dkH It says Kh should be 8 right?
 
Looks like your Alk and Calc need to be adjusted, and your Ammonia should be 0. Try a 25% - 50% water change. And if your dosing your tank i would stop. Good luck!.:)
 
oh ok.

Well we bought this awesome sun polyp rock about a month ago from a fish store. I loved it because it was open during the day and the polyps were WAY open.

So we got it and the polyps don't come out near as far. They open up a little bit when I feed. I know you feed them every day at the same time and I feed mine every night, but do you think there's a food that is better for them to eat?
