Why can't I just hand remove the scrubber algae

I have a single sided algae scrubber and the screen is too hard to remove from the bucket. I've been once a week hand removing the algae from the screen. It seems to grow better when I leave some on the screen. I've read it must be removed and scrapped off the screen while running under faucet water? Is this really necessary and why?

Just like to find some better ways to improve the scrubber performance. I've increased more even flow over the screen and added a RED/BLUE LED supplement bulb with two 120 WATT 2700k CFLs.

The goal is to simply remove (export) as much algae as possible..
Whatever method you use is fine.. The more algae you grow/remove the more nutrients you are exporting..
Its ok to leave a bit on the screen if you find it grows more/faster that way..
