Why color in deep water corals?

colors and textures
One popular theory for why corals can be so colorful is that the pigments help to protect the coral and zooxanthellae from the sun. Makes sense in a shallow environment.

But why then would corals from deeper water be colorful? This article suggests that the pigments convert the remaining available blue light to more zooxanthellae / photosynthesis friendly light. Thus more photosynthate and more energy available to the coral.

I'd feel better about it if it were in Scientific American. But HERE it is.

Any thoughts?
