why did Gary get banned?

i tried to PM gary and found out that he is banned from RC. does anyone know why? he is such a great guy and a great asset to our hobby, board, and COMAS. if it is something that we can bring up with the Mod of RC, we should do this to get Gary back. Just my 5 cents.

Banned??? I would like to know why Gary would get banned also. I always try and watch my p's and q's on here, it seems as though it's a little too easy to get banned from RC. April (luvabunny) has also been banned for some time now, and i have no idea why. Isn't there some other coarse of action the mods can take, like a 1 week chat ban or something before just booting someone forever?

I suspect it is all about money. If Gary mentioned he had a store and didn't buy advertising he would have gotten banned. He was warned once.

I also vote for getting Gary back onto the board. He has always been an asset to the club, the forum, and has pretty much NEVER mentioned ART without someone specifically asking (or asking for something they can't find anywhere).

As a specific note, I am certain the recent ban came when someone asked about Tridacna gigas, commenting they couldn't find them anywhere. Gary commented in a cryptic way that ART would have them soon.

Personally i don't think that kind of ban should apply here in a club forum, isn't gary a comas member? it's not like it was some rep from some off the wall company sneaking in here and stealing ad space or anything. it's not his fault he owns a company is it? =o)

I agree Adam, if he was posting adds in the general forums without paying for ad space, that would not be right. Even if he was posting adds here to actually advertise his store without paying RC, i could see the problem. I have never seen Gary post anything even close to advertising on the forums. If someone is looking for a specific item that is uncommon to find in the stores, i don't see why he can't let someone know that he can help out. It would be better taken care of by PM, but still not out of line IMO.

Gary is a huge assett to both the club, and to this forum.

Is there someone we can email or talk to about this issue? Will one of the mods maybe chime in here and work with us? If Gary were to put on Paul's Mermaid suit and hold a sign saying he's sorry would that fix things lol?

While I agree with a lot on this thread, I remember the same situation that has happened in the OMAS forum. No Reef Central member with direct ties to a commercial background can post directly about that commercial background. IE: An ad stating that they have such and such for sale for X amount of money all the way to just saying they are getting something in is considered an offense. As far as I know, most warnings are given through PMs and often the posts are editted to take out anything commercial. In the linked case, the mods must have felt the whole thing was considered commercial.

On the other hand, there is nothing against the User Agreement that states a regular member with no affiliation to a store can't come in here and say he found such and such item or was tipped off about a shipment date. While, it might not seem like much at first, it can become questionable later with repetitive occurences.

This is a situation where comas may benefit from having it's own run forum on our site. But then again, the wealth of information here is too much to pass up.

Well, the wealth of information here wouldn't exactly disappear if we ran our own forum. However, this is a decision that would have to be very carefully considered.

oh I know, I was just thinking out loud for everyones benefit. I like the idea of our own forum, but having us all on reefcentral kinda combines our little club with the world via PM's and Threads.
Ever since I've been coming here, I've all but stopped looking through other forums. I figure If I can't find somebody here that can help, i probably shouldn't be doing whatever it is i needed help with in the first place. Besides a few little rules that i don't care for , this forum is awesome. Great layout and easy to navigate. I only wish I could store a larger number of larger photo's so I didn't have to keep going to another site for that stuff.

Gary is a vailuable member and i am sure RC benefit from our active forum...a lot of sales to their sponsors come from our member also right?...i would hope our officers can step in and voice their objections...

Gary knows why he was banned as it was explained to him quite thoroughly. Whether it's a temporary or permanent thing is really up to him. This conversation will not impact the situation in a positive manner.
